Artest Talks About $ Games While at SJU

I read an article yesterday that said Shaquille Oneill said he got plenty of money while at LSU.

Don't see a problem with what he said. Guy had to support his family and made money playing basketball while in school. How is it any different than getting a part time job? Stupid rule in the first place.

He talks about a broker. How much a stretch would it be for a broker to talk about easing up a little in a college game, you know shave a point here or there and once your hooked, purpose,y lose a game?

It's happened and the landscape of college basketball changed because of it and it could happen again.

I believe a stipend would be fair and let's not forget Ron received one while he was here.

As for whomever thought he would make a good AC, please put the bottle down, walk away and seek professional help.

wonder if the broker was ccnobz :)

Not making any accusations but he did play very poorly in elite 8 game vs Ohio St. If he plays anywhere near his normal game we win easy in what was a one possession down to the wire game when no foul was called on Eric Barkley drive to the basket.

Not making any accusations either, but he was not himself that day...for whatever reason.

It was a well known fact that drug dealers would assemble squads of the best players in the city and play big money games against rival drug dealers. All of the players were handsome paid, and sometimes the stakes were in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Perhaps the best player in Queens College basketball history, Greg Vaughn, was asked to referee one of those games when he was shooting around at an empty court, and when an argument broke out over some call or calls he made, he was beaten to death. The below is a sanitized version of events, but the word is that it was a big money game. Some say Vaughn had no idea about the stakes, others say he may have been a paid ref.

These drug dealers fancied themselves as gms of franchises they had built. Theyd outfit their teams with uniforms and sneakers. It would be a lie to say some of the city's best college pkayers were paid to play - it was a very large number at one time, and smack in the middle of the Mullin era. Not sure if the Vaughn murder put an end to these games, but according to ron ron, probably not.

In the first half he was absolutely horrific - maybe incredible jitters. He did settle down in the second half.

Arrest would not throw a game. He was a warrior for us and to accuse him of cheating is completely unfounded and insulting.

Which no one did.

Sure looked like it was hinted at.

Years ago I heard something from whom I considered a reliable source as to the reason, but with the benefit of hindsight, I actually think the real reason was that he was in the middle of a bipolar episode. I would blame meds for making him foggy, but I don't believe he started taking any until pros.

Those of us who watched Ron's 2 year career here know that there were times that he simply did not come to play. I'm not talking about an off day, I'm talking about a game where there was obviously something more going on. One of those games happened to be the Ohio State game. Now maybe it was his mental issues, or maybe it was a personal matter, or maybe it was an injury, or maybe it was something else. I don't know. But in light of these recent revelations of his, along with his history of extremely poor decision making, I wouldn't take anything off the table.

Beast, I thanks for the article. Boo Harvey was a participant in that game which the NCAA suspended him one game for participating in an unsanctioned organized game.

See above. Once he admitted to a broker arranging pay games for him and splitting the proceeds, he has opened himself up to people speculating if there could have been more to it.

In the 80's during the crack epidemic, drug dealers were around basketball programs in the inner city. John Thompson had a sitdown with Rayful Edmonds, who was the biggest drug dealer in DC and had been hanging out with Alonzo Mourning. Coach Thompson ended up threatening Edmonds and that was the end of it.
You need to understand that basketball and drugs were the two common denominators in the inner city. Drug dealers had money to spend and they went to sporting events. They also hung out in the parks and knew all of the up and coming players.
In the late 80's, drug dealers were having games all over Jamaica involving some of the top college and street ball players in the city. They would bet as much as 50 grand on a game and players could make 500 - 1,000. What would happen a lot of times is that a drug dealer would say they are sponsoring a Picnic for the community in a park with free food and games for the kids. The highlight of the day would be a Money game sponsored by rival dealers.
As for Ron Ron, I don't know what he is talking about. To my knowledge most of the games took place in parks during the summer. There is no way he could play a money game in the afternoon and then play for St Johns in the evening. Also, Ron Ron has been known to embellish things.
Additionally, unless you know for certain what was wrong, if anything during the Ohio State game to even guess at what might have been, is doing Ron a grave disservice.
