Duke barely squeaked by Belmont at home. Took a 3 by Dawkins to put them up by 4 or 5 with 16 seconds or so on the clock. don't kowmthe final but guess they won. Duke didn't impress me at all. They are minus lots of the big talent they have had in prior years. Austin Rivers in the second half was out of control often from what I saw. Talented but not yet under control.

Sorry moose, I know it's not big east news but was interesting.

I was tuning into that game, as well, MCN. Belmont had plenty of opportunities down the stretch to take the lead, but came up empty on three consecutive possessions. They eventually were able to cut it to 1 with 51 seconds remaining. Dawkins hit the 3 ball (as, you mentioned) with the shot clock winding down and they went up 75-71 with 15 seconds remaining. I turned the tv after that shot, as I figured that was ballgame.

It's still early in the season, but I saw nothing from them tonight that particularly left me concerned.

I believe Belmont only lost by 1, 77-76

Lamb had play of the night on Sportscenter. Sick tomahawk jam over Columbia player.

Loyola-Marymount upsets UCLA (LMU led 95% of the game) 69-58.

EDIT: This is what can happen early in the season, folks. So, no need for some of you to be too negative about a young St. John's team.

Sorry CR, but loving that UCLA lost this one and not by a hair. They will still be a good team though this season. Duke could have easily lost to Belmont today too.

this is the view I like:
St. John's 0 0 2 0
Connecticut 0 0 1 0
DePaul 0 0 1 0
Louisville 0 0 1 0
Marquette 0 0 1 0
Pittsburgh 0 0 1 0
Rutgers 0 0 1 0
Villanova 0 0 1 0
West Virginia 0 0 1 0
Cincinnati 0 0 0 0
Georgetown 0 0 0 0
Notre Dame 0 0 0 0
Providence 0 0 0 0
Seton Hall 0 0 0 0
South Florida 0 0 0 0
Syracuse 0 0 0 0

The UCLA game shows the power of the 3 point shot when an underdog is a good shooting team like LMU.
I hope "Slo-Mo" watches this game in slow motion! This was the #17 team in the nation and I know they are playing all their home games off campus this year but getting just over 5,000 fans to this game is an insult to UCLA. I read where LMU, the visiting team, had close to 1,000 fans at this game.
I wish SJ was vigilant enough a couple of years ago to see the potential of a kid right in their back yard in Waterbury Ct! The pg Anthony Ireland was deadly from the outside! We do not have a player even close to his shooting ability and although Malik Stith and Ireland are both 5'10, there is no comparison in talent. Again, thank you Norm Roberts!

Duke didn't impress me at all

Really? Not at all? Winningest coach in history, half a dozen guys over 6'9", a class that includes 4 four-star recruits and the number 1 player in the country playing their first game ever and they didn't impress you at all? They shot 50 percent from 3, that didn't get even an itsy bitsy teeny weeny smidgen of impress out of you? (Saint John's has made 6 threes in 2 games, shooting 25 percent - while giving up 20.) You are a tough audience.

Prediction: In January DoOk beats Saint John's by 30. In March they're still playing in the NCAA tournament after SJ gets bounced from the CBI.

Oddly I just read the same thing on the Lehigh board.

FWIW Belmont was a 30-5 tourney team last year that only lost one of their top 5.

And re crowds at the UCLA game the Sports Arena is probably equidistant to LMU and UCLA. The fact that the sports arena is essentially on USC's Campus will make going to UCLA games this year kind of odd.

I have to agree re. Belmont, they are one of the most experienced teams in D1 this year and having a front line that includes 6'9 and 6'11 talented players that neutralized Duke up front. SJ could have lost to Belmont by 20 at home.

Re. UCLA, not having your fans show up is sad when you are a nationally ranked team playing just a few miles from campus. SJ had more fans showing up at MSG when we sucked with a capital "S". UCLA fans are prima donnas! Sorry CR, but Pauley does not come close to Cameron:)

Mason Plumlee actually had a pretty good game on last night. So, he wasn't exactly neutralized. Overall, Duke's frontline is big, but are they very good? I expect one of their bigs (probably, one of the Plumlee's) to be consistent, but I'm not sure I can say that for the entire lot.

Yes, Mason had his usual game, but Dook has three McDonald AA up front that are 6'11 while the Belmont bigs were an after-thought in high school. They played the Dook AA's even and that, in my book, neutralized their superior skills up front so it became a game of guards making the difference. Without the Bruin bigs holding their own down low, Duke would have won easily.

Neil Fingleton and Joey Beard were also Mickey D's AA's, so that doesn't necessarily mean anything. We already know it can sometimes be a headscratcher when it comes to some Duke players ending up in the McDonald's game.

What superior skills does Duke's frontline presents? It seems you're using AA too loosely. Duke's guards and possibly, one of their bigs are usually the ones who make a difference. Many of those guys (especially, Ryan Kelly) haven't shown much. They are big, but what have they really shown other than Mason Plumlee?

ND beat Miss Valley St by 13. Pretty much only running 5 guys out there (Cooley, Atkins, Martin, Brooks and the frosh Grant)
