Was it premature to call him a walk on after one game vs Towson?
His play that game was walk-on level bad IMO. He was better against Michigan (I think i gave him a B or something for that game, whereas the other guards all got Fs). I thought he was again mediocre against Quinnipiac. I am curious to see what happens when we start playing high level teams that have guards with high level physiques and skills. Cadeau is something of an outlier because he's short and can't shoot, so that was a good matchup for Darling (not so much for Sellers!).

Pitino is going to play him out of necessity because he has nobody else unless one of the other guards suddenly turns into a PG (and he's going to say Darling is a rock star because, Pitino). But he should not be playing more than 8-10 minutes per game on a team with Final 4 aspirations, and if he were on U Conn, for example, he would be playing Aiden Mahaney minutes.

Great kid, solid with the ball, if he gets it to other players, hits the occasional open shot, and maybe surprises some opponents by getting to the rim, that will be wonderful.

But tbh - and it pains me to say this - he makes me miss Daniss Jenkins. We would have a better shot at the FF with him at PG.

i would add that Sim played with a black hole at PG his freshman year and did not play PG his sophomore year. Getting assists was not his role.

I also think it's premature to compare his stats to Darling after one game vs. Quinnipiac.
BTW RJ Luis who you know very well, had 12 games with 3 or more assists last year. You don't need to be a PG to get your teammates involved.

Yeah but Rebounds and steals have to do with that? Also a large enough sample size IMO.

Darling in 17 minutes impacted every part of the game and he did on a poor shooting night. A poor shooting night for Sim meant a useless night far far too often.

I'm not going to take a position against Darling...very happy so far. We need rugged guards. Even a guy as slight as Hatten would battle like crazy. Glover and Sim -- who I liked -- didn't have that mindset. It was great to see Sellers competing the way he did on the glass and on defense. Darling is clearly just wired that way, so it wasn't a surprise.

It’s an instinct. How big was Ponds? Nothing frustrates me more than a one dimensional guard.

Trivia:
From Eye on College Basketball pod..

Arizona beat Florida to start the season. It’s the first time a top 5 team was beat by an opponent who made less than 5 threes since we pulled off the feat.

Any guesses as to what game it was for SJU? They said the year and it gave it away for me

2011 vs Duke? Might also be one of the 2018 wins over Duke and Villanova but feel like Ponds and Clark would have made a few each in those games

We could have done it twice in 2011. I don't remember the specific stats of the game but I remember the Pitt game being an absolute defensive war, don't remember a lot of threes falling

Marv Time. Haven't thought about him in a long time. Great kid. What a chucker, though. He really believed he could make those 3s and damned if he wasn't gonna keep taking them. Think he played internationally for a long time. Tremendous character player.
