Anton Goff Interview

Goff's fundraising goes back to his days as AD at Division II Bowie State University in Maryland, plans to connect New York and St. John’s in various ways. The first is through basketball and Carnesecca Arena, which Goff would like to either renovate or develop entirely from scratch.

“That’s one of the priorities that we’re looking at,” Goff said of the 5,600-seat complex. “And whether that’s to do something to renovate the arena, or build something new, we’re just trying to go through it all, to self-study right now.
I would love to add seating, because I think the more games we could keep here, the better home crowd we’d have, the better home court advantage we’d have, which equals more wins… And I’d love to play our big games in [Madison Square Garden]. That’s my ultimate goal.”

Shouldn't St. Johns be playing more home games at MSG? Particularly when they start winning consistently and fan support increases.
Being the only college team that can claim MSG as home court is part of the programs identity and appeal.

Brand new or huge refurbishing decades overdue. I like Goff's ambition, hope it comes to fruition.

In the meantime, I'd like to see him bring some closure to the "missing" Joe Lapchick statue and see that it's placed directly in front of the current CA. It's a disgrace to keep it buried somewhere.
You are not going to like the reason I have heard for the delay since the last time i posted on this topic and informed about the lack of agreement on where to place the statue. Apparently there is a deeper issue than location for the delay. Forgive me for not remembering if it is the board of governors or trustees which has a number of priests on it and has been responsible for the delays, but word has it that a number of priests are unhappy that a sports figure is being honored with the first statue on campus ahead of a religious figure. Not a good look to say the least.
what do they want a gold statue of Fr Harrington? Jesus

I'm willing to kick in a couple of bucks. Anyone else?

Sure & I'm not even an alum :)

I think 7 to 10 games a year in MSG is a good target. We could be Villanova good for several years and will not get a big crowd for Bethune Cookman or Binghamton. An on-campus arena that has seat backs and holds 7-8K is a good target and then play every game where you expect more than that at MSG.

Agree, and think within that range should be consideration of where we are as a program, currently closer to 7.

OOC I think it would be great if we could have standing home and homes with Duke and Cuse in alternating years, so you're getting one of those in MSG every year.

On top of that would be great to leverage the desire for premium programs to get games in NYC to get one more big game in the Garden each year. Instead of Penn St. get Kentucky.

Even if these games produce losses think big crowds with a lot of energy are good for buzz, profile, recruiting, etc. Nice to have a few more opportunities to host recruits en masse for big games with virtually guaranteed crowds at MSG.

Big East a little trickier because I think you're only locks year to year are Nova and GTown. At the moment probably Providence and Seton Hall as well. Creighton/Xavier/Butler I'm torn. If we get better where we are more on their level, and can fill more of MSG with just SJU fans for those games, then maybe you can play them there. Until then while we are more of an underdog would probably rather have them in Carnesecca, seems like a better home court advantage and those games are not currently big draws at MSG.

SJU being a Top 25 type team simplifies a lot of this I think.

Once you sell 5600 season tickets then we can move more games to MSG. That means sustained winning.

Right now should only play weekend games at MSG (not including Sunday nights). The rest should be on campus.

Yes Manhattan
Weekday games & Sunday nights = no sense for working people or folks w/little kids
= too much with the long commutes and late night stuff
People need sleep to chill & prepare for work & school
Need to "get real" w schedule
:)

All the BE games are televised on Fox, that is why the schedule is not always accommodating. It's a trade off. Not good for the commuter. But good for the couch potatoe living in FL. :)

Fox controls times for the post part but they do not control whether we play at campus or MSG.
