Amir's debut

Maybe then Bama you aren't a Mets fan. As mentioned before DWright and his gloves, but do Mets fans remember in recent history Aaron Heilman and John Maine. They were absolute head cases, and I don't mean that in the Carlos Zambrano type of way. I mean in the way that they would beat themselves up over every little mistake and it cost them their careers. I used to think Pelfrey and Niese were the same way but the latter especially is showing he will be around for awhile.

I know it's rookie ball which is bottom of the barrel but you'd think they'd have these kids throw some simulated games to build stamina before just throwing them out there. Amir is a strong minded kid but especially in a sport like baseball where 90% of pitchers are headcases wouldn't you think they'd want players to gain a little confidence rather than pitch 2 innings and know no matter what that's all they'd have in the game? Doesn't seem like the best method but what do I know.

How do you know they didn't have him throw simulated game, just asking? Also heard the expression that most place kickers are head cases but where did you come up with 90% of pitchers are head cases?

I was being facetious but have you ever seen a baseball game before? Players in general are superstitious(especially pitchers) and are mentally fighting themselves constantly. And I was assuming a kid who throws 2/3 inning or 2 innings max as a starter, has not thrown a real simulated game

There are different levels of Rookie ball. In the lower half season leagues , it is not uncommon for kids to go 2 -3 innings. They don't want them to go 7 or 9 so it doesn't matter how many simulated games they pitch if any. It's all gathering experience. Most teams have innings limits and they only plan on allowing pitchers innings to go up by a certain percentage each year. It is why Washington is saying they will shut down Strasberg once he reaches the number of innings they had planned for him and why there were the Joba rules.

TheTexas Rangers are one team that does not subscribe to this way of thinking with Nolan Ryan in charge.

My guess is that the manager saw a flaw in his delivery, or a disaster in the making, so he got him out of there and figured to pull him and use this first start as a way to just get his feet wet. He's in rookie league, but is a pretty big investment, so more important than innings is to build on some success and get him comfortable pitching at this level. He could have been very flustered, and I'm assuming it was a tactical removal and nothing to do with pitch count.

Amir had his longest outing of his professional career Saturday evening, going 2+ innings allowing 2 earned runs. Both runs scorded after Amir was lifted from the game in the 3rd inning after hitting the leadoff batter and walking the next batter with both runners coming around to score.

Amir came into Friday's game to start the 2nd inning. He faced 9 batters in an inning and 2/3, walking 5 and throwing 2 wild pitches, while striking out 3 and allowing 1 earned run. His ERA now stands at 7.88

7.88. Wouldn't mind if that was his ppg average this coming season.

All kidding aside Amir had his best outing of the season the other day.

3 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 3 K's and 1 BB.

ERA now down to 6.55

On Aug 7th Amir was elevated to the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League, a higher rookie league. In his only 2 starts with Billings, before returning to Queens, he pitched 6 scoreless innings while striking out 5, allowing 4 hits and no runs. He finished his season strong and has great potential. A 6'6 lefty who can throw 100 mph is someone to invest in, as Cinn has done. His complete baseball stats are below as well as his writeup in The Billings Gazzette.
