American Sniper

I'd recommend a movie called Short Term 12 in terms of relatively recent movies. It's a bit intense but worth a watch

I've never even heard of this one but it's available now on netflix streaming so I'll watch this one tonight instead of the state of the union address. thx !

Just a quick note to say that Short Term 12 wasn't eligible this year as it was a 2013 movie but like Sirvoo said, it was real good. I think Brie Larson is going to be a big star soon. She was nominated for best actress at last year's independent spirit awards for this.

I was flipping around really late one night and caught the Independent Spirit Awards just as a college girlfriend was receiving the award for best producer. Totally freaked me out, and made me wish she never dumped me because she must have some money. :cheer:

I need her to hit it Oscar big so I can write a tell-all.

Yes, very cool. What was the film?

I'd have to google it. It was something I'd never heard of. Plus, she looked better in college, so I might be afraid to reveal the movie anyway. :cheer:

Wow I just finished it and it was an excellent movie

that octopus story was heartbreaking and like Austour mentioned that Brie Larson was great too

I'll say though, there have been an awful lot of very good movies this year. The only movie I didn't like was Gone Girl, which everyone seemed to love. I found it predictable from mid point on in the movie, although it was nice seeing Doogie Howser get killed.

I want to see Unbroken, which was an amazing book, The theory of everything, Birdman, Wild, and a bunch others.

Beast, you are correct. Unbroken (the book) is amazing... you might be a bit disappointed in the movie.

Very happy to hear. We should keep the thread going if anyone has any gems let them be known!

Saw "a most violent year" this past Saturday. It's playing in limited theaters I saw it in the Malverne theater it was excellent.

Also saw "the drop" which is James gandolfini's last movie. Available on demand. Also excellent.

Re: earlier post in thread, saw "night crawler" the weekend it opened and was a little disappointed but was still good.

I also caught "rob the mob" on encore on demand and it is a must-watch.

Any recommendations for movies that are on demand now since it looks like I'll be in the house the next two days?

Funny. I was at the Malverne on Saturday night and saw the Theory of Everything. I heard someone screaming in the theater to fire Lavin, but didn't guess it was you. Sirvoo thought it was a chick flick, but my wife didn't like it, and came away not liking Hawking based on the way the movie ended.

I forgot to mention that one, too. For my money, you really can't go wrong with any movie that has Tom Hardy in it. And Gandolfini is always good, even when his script has been iffy.

just watched theory of everything. Movie was Ok but that guy that played Hawking did an awesome job

Finally got to see American Sniper this evening and thought it was excellent. I have never been in a movie theater where about 400 people sat in absolute silence (a few sniffles aside) as the final credits rolled. I will be thinking about that movie for a long time. Much better than Hurt Locker, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, etc. Not sure if it tops Apocalypse Now though... Clint sure knows how to make 'em.

HBO documentary Night Will Fall. It's about Hitchcock's unfinished documentary on Nazi Concentration camps.

It kind of brings into sharp focus what those who volunteer for military service deal with on a daily basis when stationed in middle east war zones. For me, it elicited a deep appreciation of those who wager their lives in order to protect and serve our country.

Saw gone girl last night. Crazy movie. Too long but it was worth the watch on the couch.

Saw it in the theatre. Most who read the book loved the movie, but to me, as soon as it was clear the alive and was diabolically crazy the movie was over.

I liked it. For what it was, it was pretty good. I didn't read the book. Wife hated the book.
