American Sniper

Difficult for me to get upset at losing to DePaul after seeing American Sniper today. The movie puts things in perspective.

Quite simply one of the most important films that every American should see. Riveting performance by Bradley Cooper.

Makes me really thankful for those who protect us through service in the Armed forces. Amazing people.

Great movie

Ranks #2 so far this year on the mjmaherjr oscar list

Imitation game so far has been my favorite

Hated boyhood didn't like bird man but looking forward to seeing Selma

I loved "Birdman." Looking forward to seeing "American Sniper" at some point -- the trailer is intense. I haven't seen "Imitation Game," but Benedict Cumberbatch really can do anything.

Nathalie loved bird man too. I tried watching it a second time but that movie just doesn't do it for me.

Something I didn't know was that Cooper was already working on developing Sniper with the sniper guy before he got killed. I had no idea. that's crazy

Also didn't know that how they broke the code in imitation game remained secret for 50 years after

Did anyone see A Most Violent a Year?

Too lazy to drive to Malverne tonight to see it since its in limited theaters but I'll prob go tomorrow.

I haven't been to the Malverne in probably 15 years, but I always liked that theater. Saw some good movies there that saved me a trip to the city.

Birdman, Boyhood, Budapest...all mediocrities. Maybe those in showbiz would understand Birdman better. I didn't. Boyhood was Linklater ripping off his Before Sunrise trilogy...with actors just making up the boring script as they go along. It also rips off a BBC documentary that followed a classroom of kids through several decades. Pass.

I liked Budapest. We just got the Cake and theory of everything screeners in the mail so will check those out this week

Overall I haven't thought that this past year had a lot of quality movies except for a few

Just saw Selma, which is very powerful and with great story telling. I wish the director didn't take such license in creating a false narrative between MLK and LBJ, however.

Loved Boyhood, was like watching my son grow up all over again, my favorite so far. Agree with some Birdman was ok at best. Looking forward to Imitation Game and Amer. Sniper.

When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was one of the Lavin-haters looking for a recommendation.

My son, who is quite a movie buff, having studied every era of film, loved Boyhood. I asked him why, and he said it was very personal for him, since he is the same age and had some very similar experiences even if his environment was quite different. In an intelligent way, the film resonated with him. I saw Boyhood, and didn't see the strong similarity to the trilogy that you did, except there was a time lapse and Ethan Hawke was the star. But different reactions and opinions are what makes movies great.

I really enjoyed "Budapest." I thought "Locke" was great, and "Nightcrawler" was very good. So along with Birdman those are the best four I can remember. I see a lot of foreign films that have completely slipped my mind. Getting old, I guess.

But honestly, the most enjoyable time at the movies for me this year was "Guardians of the Galaxy." That was such a fun movie. But I guess that's why no one is asking me to join the Academy.

Cool we haven't seen a couple of those yet. Definitely will check them out

Larry if you ever see good foreign flicks or documentaries pm me and let me know which ones are worth seeing

I have to say this year I was a bit underwhelmed but look forward to seeing sniper this week at some point.
Top 5 was easily my favorite comedy, Guardians of the Galaxy was the best "blockbuster" by far.

As for the dramas

Birdman takes the cake for me. The acting and general flow of the movie was top notch. Similarly Grand Budapest was an above average movie...very good by this year's standards.

I can't put my finger on it but Boyhood to me was missing something. Ethan Hawke was phenomenal but as a 20-something male I didn't find the film hitting close to home.

I'd recommend a movie called Short Term 12 in terms of relatively recent movies. It's a bit intense but worth a watch

I'll say though, there have been an awful lot of very good movies this year. The only movie I didn't like was Gone Girl, which everyone seemed to love. I found it predictable from mid point on in the movie, although it was nice seeing Doogie Howser get killed.

I want to see Unbroken, which was an amazing book, The theory of everything, Birdman, Wild, and a bunch others.

Theory of everything is not for the male gender just a heads up...complete snooze fest
