QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s basketball alumnus Amar Alibegovic has been named to the preliminary list of players that will represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at the European World Cup Qualifiers later this month. The 6-foot-9 forward is among 24 candidates who will compete for the national team with the hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
A four-year letterwinner for the Red Storm, Alibegovic appeared in 107 games including 61 BIG EAST appearances during his time in Queens. He finished his career with 287 points, 177 rebounds, 28 blocks and 28 steals.
Alibegovic helped St. John’s earn an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, making 24 appearances during his freshman campaign. In his second season, Alibegovic was one of five Johnnies to play in all 32 games and averaged a career-best 5.1 points per contest. He scored double-figures six times in 2015-16, including a memorable 15 point performance to lift the Johnnies past Syracuse at Madison Square Garden. Over the course of his final two seasons, Alibegovic provided veteran leadership for the Johnnies in notable wins, as he made appearances in a pair of BIG EAST Tournament victories over Georgetown and against No. 5 Duke.
Bosnia and Herzegovina opens play in Group E of the European World Cup Qualifiers on June 29 at Mejdan Arena in Tuzla. Three days later, the team will take on Belgium at Lotto Arena in Antwerp. Both contests are available on LiveBasketball.TV.
