All-Time All-City Hoop Team

They have Mark Jackson as being born and raised in Brooklyn, but he moved to St Albans Queens when he was 7-ish. Even though he went to Loughlin, I think he should be listed as a Queens player. Those were the playgrounds he learned to play the game on...same neighborhood as McGuire and Cousy several years earlier.

Know this is gonna piss people off, but IMO he doesn't even deserve to be on the list. Most of the other guys on the list were immediate impact players at the college level. Jackson was not. Pearl was so far superior as both a high school player and college freshman that it wasn't even a debate And people can blame Louie all the want for not playing him more over Moses, but the fact is that he was not prepared to take over the reigns as the floor general when he arrived here.

Paging Mr. Mashburn, Mr. Jamal Mashburn please.

Forgot about Jamal. Pretty much single handedly carried his Hayes team to city championship, and was NY State POY I'm pretty sure.

Yes all important and true but the list puts a priority on what NYC players did for their entire career.

Mash was consensus 1st team AA when college was still loaded with stars (Hurley, Webber, Hardaway, Grant Hill, Glenn Robinson, etc) and then avg 20 ppg in the league for 10+ years

When you look at these lists and read this post, it makes you wonder why NYC basketball is not turning out top players anymore. Here is just one example. When Mark Jackson graduated from high school in 1983, he was considered the fourth best PG in New York City. Pearl Washington, Kenny Smith, and Kenny Hutchinson were all rated higher than him. Long Islands Billy Donovan was also in that class.
What PG over the last 10 years is comparable, maybe Sebastian, who graduated in 2004. This is one of the reasons that our staff has been recruiting out of state. I would love to have New York kids playing at St. Johns again, but am realistic enough to know that the landscape has changed.
Think about what is going on at Seton Hall now with the last "great" NYC ballplayer.

The Mark Jackson /Pearl Washington comparisons are interesting for the fact Pearl was a much better player in high school and college and Jackson reversed that in the pros.

MM Earl Manigault is on the list, and he had no career. So I don't get the criteria that they used.

When Mark came out of high school he was the fourth best point guard in NY that year, behind Pearl, Kenny Smith and Kenny Hutchinson. The rankings had those three quite high, and then a big drop off to Mark. Story goes that Louie offered all four and said he'd take the first to commit. Can only imagine what would have been said had this board existed then.

I saw Jabbar play in a closed scrimmage his senior year against my school's (then) undefeated team. I've never seen anything in high school like it before or since. Huge, athletic, skilled and passionate. You could have put him on the floor with 4 6th graders and they still would have won by 30.

on the espn 30 for 30 they had said that Pearl's final two schools were SJU and the Cuse.

So in the opinion of the older posters, if we had gotten Pearl instead of Mark Jackson could we have won it all in 85 or 86?

It certainly would have bettered chances, assuming Pearl got starting nod over Mike Moses in 85 :). I liked Moses, but didn't think he merited starting.

Louie would likely have never let Pearl be Pearl. "Walk it up Boo!"

So you are also saying that Louie never let Boo Harvey meet his full potential because he wouldnt let him run?

Looie favored the halfcourt offense and walk it up guards who shot infrequently and turned it over even less. Hence Bobby Kelly, Calabrese, and others over flashy guards.

I agree, but he kind of sort of let them run the year after the Final Four. That team might have dunked more than any SJU team in my memory.
Pearl would have been terrible in Louie's offense

Yes.

John Feinstein on Louie and Boo:

lol Used to drive me and my friends crazy, "St. John's wants to slow it down!", "St. John's wants to keep it in the 50's", "St. John's doesn't want to run" for years and years and years. Didn't matter what the talent was. Can't tell you how great it is now to hear, "St. John's wants to get out and run!"

Music to my ears.

Yup, Boo was a jet and lou used to cause him to get 10 second violations walking the ball up the court!

So I guess you're asking who would've been the better back-up to Mike Moses? That aside, we would've had a better chance with Pearl, who was a major force at the collegiate level.

In a halfcourt offense? Pearl was not a good shooter and might have actually had less foot speed than Jackson which would have hurt him since we only played man.

For the record Pearl was my favorite non Johnnie college player but he def made the right decision
