(AdvoCare Invitational) UCF, Sun. Nov. 26, 12 Noon, ESPN U, 970AM

We won against the kenpom #70 team in Florida. TAKE IT.

Very happy with this trip!!!

I suspect that every team we face the rest of the season will throw the two/three zone at us, because we have no idea how to beat it. Bobby Knight says, drive into it, and you might get to the basket and score, draw a foul, or get the opportunity to dish off to a team mate, who might score. Of course, consistent three point shooting beats the zone, but that part of our game seems to have eluded us. Fran Friscella seemed to have a pretty good suggestion for beating this zone, and once again, it involved a player penetrating to the middle of the zone, and receiving the ball, and turning and shooting. We need to work this out, and fast. We need to find our three point game again. We need to stop fouling. We need height and depth. I hope this doesn't turn into another LONG season.

Glad to get the win but you dont exactly get the warm and fuzzies heading into this week

Ugly, very ugly. But an ugly win far better than an ugly loss! It has levelled my views about the season though. As espken notes, this game exposed numerous weaknesses, poor ball movement, playground one-on-one mentalities, team freezes against the zone, some out-of-control and bad judgment shots by our guards. 6 - 32 from Ponds and Lovett. Ouch.

I think most people just assumed we'd win in a landslide because we're playing UCF and not a Power 5 team. UCF has actually been decent the last few years and as mentioned are ranked #70 in Kenpom. This win could mean more than Nebraska or Oregon State. All those teams are basically the same.

Yes we looked awful but I think that has to do with playing a third game in four days. Same reason UCF did.

Sometimes you just have a bad game. Obviously this was by far our worst game and we're seven games in, so I'm not concerned we forgot how to play.

I agree we need to keep expectations in line, but bottom line we're 6-1 after starting 2-5 last year.

Brutal game for both teams. Total rock figh. But we got the W. 3rd game in 4 days can be tough at this level. .............Staff better get this team ready for zone D all season.

It’s November. How we play in conference play is what’s important. Get these early wins and hope we play our best hoops in February & March.

Honestly Bashir drives me nuts every time he gets the ball in the offense he has to pause then he either goes into a dance or shoots. The pause is like a (insert extreme example here or see my previous post) in the middle of the offense. Every time he pauses he is killing the flow of the offense and letting the defense adjust. I'd rather Mullin pulls him every single time he pauses until he learns it.

Amar is happy.

Please, that game was disgusting. You can't put lipstick on a pig. I saw no game plan I could recognize and our team look confused.

Would like to see us try starting Owens or Yakwe up front with Clark and bringing Ahmed off the bench. He might benefit from watching the game at the start and it might help him avoid silly fouls and miscues he always seem to start the game with.

Again, last years team would have folded when giving up a big lead in the 2nd half. Good thing it's not last year. All the things we got wrong today are fixable. Take the win, move on.

One of the ugliest wins I have ever seen in 50 years as a huge fan of St John's basketball
But, a win is a win
I'll take it

A couple of tweets to put the game in perspective:

Zach B: "St John's survives 46-43. They finish 2-1 in Orlando. Not a masterpiece".

Matt A: "6-1. That is all that matters. Onto the next". #sjubb

That injury to his non-shooting hand? Could be hampering his 'form'.
