ACC NYC Desires

We are the only true to blood NYC metro area major college basketball team. Case closed.

Can I re-open the case? Seton Hall and Rutgers are also in the NYC metro area.

Are East Brunswick and South Orange really NYC area? More like the greater Newark area.

Seton Hall is just 5 miles further from the Garden than St. John's is.

Doesn't make it NYC...

But it's still in the NYC Metro Area.

EW YORK – The Atlantic Coast Conference will literally ring in a new era on Monday, July 1.

The date was circled on the ACC’s calendar months ago, as it prepared to officially welcome Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse and expand its league membership to 15 member institutions. That vision becomes a reality on Monday, July 1, and the ACC is eager to start spreading the news.

The ACC’s 15 mascots are scheduled to make stops at the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, the Circle Line Harbor Cruise and the NASDAQ MarketSite. The schedule also includes an outreach program at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where the mascots will make bedside visits in multiple wards. Those roaming Times Square or on a boat trip around the Statue of Liberty might find a Tiger, a Panther or a Demon Deacon nearby.

I think a well placed phone call to an administrator at Montefiore expressing concerns that children may be inclined to touch the mascots, facilitating the need to disinfect and scrub the mascot before entering the next patient room.

As I stated previously with regard to this topic, the whole issue depends upon how good St. Johns becomes. If Coach Lavin has the program ranked in the top 15 year after year, and we start packing the Garden again, there's no way the ACC gets in there. As long as the St. Johns program is very good the Big East tournament will be sold out. If Lavin can't get the program to that level, and we're not packing the Garden and the Big East Tournament struggles, then we're in trouble. I think the whole issue hinges on our success.

Good points, but that's a huge IF. This program being a top 15 team would be a complete 180 from last year. How many teams go from absolutely terrible shooting and low chemistry to good shooting and high chemistry 1 year later? I just feel like SJ is cursed. I'm hoping Jordan is the guy that changes the storm clouds (pun intended) into sunshine.

The last time we were a top 15 team, we were a 17 win NIT team the year before.

Not only are Seton Hall and Rutgers closer to their own major cities like someone said i.e. Newark, they are located in an entirely different state. This is what I mean...people want Jersey to claim NYC but they never will so they should just give up. No one thinks NYC and groups in SH and Rutgers except for NYC wannabes. Name one other major conference basketball team located in the NYC metro area...and by that I mean in NY, not Jersey, not CT, not Eastern PA. Good luck, because the only one is SJU. I never understood why people in Jersey can't just be happy with being in Jersey and having their own pride. They see their big brothers in NY and they want to be that so badly it gets kind of old. In fact, the only reason many people live in Jersey is only to be closer to NYC without NYC prices. But at the end of the day if you look out the window even if you can see the skyline, you are still New Jersey. NJ has its own major metro areas like Paterson, Newark, New Brunswick, South Orange, etc. that you could make the case that Rutgers and Seton Hall are in those metro areas first and NYC's metro area second. The thing about NY is that for people on LI and much of Westchester (except for big cities like Yonkers) NYC is the only true major city. It's different. I think we need to take more ownership being that we actually are within NYC limits and the other guys i.e. Rutgers, SH, and Cuse are just pretenders some of which are not even in our state. I would feel really weird pretending to be for a Connecticut team even though it's only 20 miles from the north shore of LI. States have boundaries and I will never lump the tri-state together. CT is CT, NJ is NJ, and NY is NY.

It's different though. Paterson and Newark are not big cities or metro areas. They are cities. Most people in those areas of Jersey are from NY, work in NY, spend their leisure time in NY. The Giants and Jets play in Jersey. It's a suburb of NY. Their property values and taxes are high because of NYC. When you ask a person from those areas of Jersey about "the city" they will think you're referring to NYC. They are by definition in the NYC Metro area. I live further North than Westchester and still consider the city to be NYC. I agree that being within city limits is a huge advantage for us but you said "NYC Metro Area" and North Jersey is certainly within that definition. If you were just referring to NYC then you shouldn't have added Metro Area.

I understand it's technically the NYC metro area...no argument there, but I just think it's weird considering another state essentially part of another state. You could make the case that Allentown, PA is a suburb of NYC, but it's another state entirely with a different culture. There was a reason Sinatra tried to escape his "little town blues" in Jersey...he was jealous of the bright lights of NYC. Only a very small part of Jersey is even considered true NYC suburbs...most of it is actually more rural and barren. Other than North Jersey it's a bunch of nothing and you notice that people root for Philly teams.

Lets be honest, the ACC could all do somersalts down Broadway and nobody would give a damn. It would be like Rutgers going to Chicago and parading down Michigan avenue trying to establish themselves as Chicago's team because they are now in the Big 10. Please. Nobody cares. Win and this talk is a moot point.

striving for top 15 doesn't put fannies in the seats...striving for championships does.

it's what separates the acc from the new big east.

Baby steps. We barely even made the NIT last year now being #15 in the nation isn't even enough? I think many of us will be tickled pink if we are ranked at all in the top 25. How long has it been since we have truly been ranked consistently? A decade? Longer?

Baby Steps? that's what we heard incessantly during the norm error.

top 15 might be satisfying at the end of this year. my point is we don't want to settle for that every year. that's what i'm hearing from the fan base.

Just wait. Cuse has not hit the Tobacco Road bias yet. I want to see the NC/south schools approve NYC. They couldn't approve DC for heaven's sake. NC is the destination state in 95%+ of ACC Tourneys - book it.

Kudos to Sports Illustrated's Andy Glockner for telling it like it is. In his article yesterday on the upcoming ACC season (he actually is picking Syracuse to win), he makes the following statement when talking about whether the ACC should play their Tournament in the Garden...

" The roots of the ACC are in North Carolina, and I’d like to see the new Big East maintain its presence at the Garden. That’s where that tournament belongs."

About time someone stated the obvious.
