@JayJayUSATODAY: 2014 F Abdul-Malik Abu tells me that NC State, Florida, Providence and UConn are coming at him the hardest right now.

Providence is primed to jump over Uconn if Uconn can't get in to a real conference soon.

Honestly this is a great post. Providence is very much a dark horse in the conference. Although losing Ledo for good was a major hit for them, they still have the Big East's leading scorer in Cotton, Batts, All American Dunn, and a highly touted recruit in Austin. I expect them to notch 2 or 3 top 25 wins this coming season. They seem like they have momentum from a very solid year last year. They have come a long way from when we manhandled them 2 yrs ago with Harkless.

Do the tea leaves tell us what kind of shot we realistically have in recruiting him

I don't have a clue. Not even getting a mention (although he has a lot of suitors) concerns me.

I wonder if the staff is giving a harder look to Angel Delgado who has less offers but is a rebounding machine.

None of those schools above scare me besides Donovan at Florida.

Should be interesting.

Abu is going to be a fantastic get for anyone. PC should be in it till the end just because Cooley was on him so early and he was at every single one of Abu's games last year. That made a big impression on him, but with KU and now UK involved who knows. Being in on Terrell so early is a help I guess but I have to believe whoever wants Abu will offer Terrell as well.

It is great that we are getting serious interest from all of these highly rated recruits. If the team wins like I expect them to, we be able to beat the blue bloods for just about anyone.

Last year he played in the Hoopville tournament in Boston.
I am going to Boston with my younger son as he will be playing in 12 and under bracket this year and I hope to watch Abdul play.

Supposedly, will visit St. John's. No available timetable when he'll visit, though.

Great news.

He's my #1 target (yes, even above Whitehead).
#1 target for 2014?

Yes. He's the player I want most.

If we lose out on Whitehead, we still have some depth at SG with an experienced senior scorer in D'Angelo.

Our front court will take a massive hit with Sanchez and Gift definitely gone and Jakarr more than likely leaving.

I feel that it'll be easier for Lavin to find a backup SG to groom (Carrington, Williams), than to find a quality forward.

My pecking order:
1- Abu
2- Whitehead
3- Larrier
4- Delgado

Good news fans, I just crossed the Canadian border coming back from Boston where the AAU team I am involved with Red Rush sent 4 different age group teams to play in the Hoopville 2013 Tournament. Last night our 17 Year old boys played Expressions Elite 17 year old team and got destroyed. Abdul was very very good. He is a true power forward who dunked everything possible, plays with great energy and strength and plays hard every possession. He was a true man amongst boys. He reminds me so much of Justin Burrell when I saw him play for Bridgton Academy.
I spoke with him this morning before his 11am game and asked him how recruiting is going. He said very well but does not know at present where he will go. I then asked where St. Johns fits in and he said they are right up there , he likes them a lot. I told him if he will go there he can fill Jakaar"s spot and win the BE rookie of the year and follow Mo Harkless and Jakaar. He liked that, smiled and laughed. I then showed him pictures of my kids with D'Angelo, Sir Dom, Phil and Nuri who, on my phone and he knew them all. When we were leaving the gym at 1:30 after our final team had played he said good by and took pictures very graciously with my younger son who played in the 12 and under division.
A great kid and a great player. We would be well served to get him.

Appreciate the news, 'north!

For those who are unaware the player in my Avatar is Abdul Malik Abu together with my 12 year old son at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sunday past.
My son is wearing the St. Francis t shirt that Glenn Braica gave him last Sunday after his last game in Montreal.
However, there is nothing to fear, both my sons bleed St. Johns Red like their father and have their hearts set on playing in Jamaica , Queens.

All I want to know is, can they shoot 3's and when can they start?

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — With a slew of high-major coaches watching, Abdul Malik Abu flashed his vast array of skills here on Friday morning at the Peach Jam.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Boston Kimball Union made a nice hook shot in the lane, drained a 3-pointer and threw down a number of authoritative dunks.

In the end, his 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block weren’t enough to overcome a 33-point, 14-rebound showing by Stanley Johnson and the Expressions Elite lost to the Oakland Soldiers, 67-64, in a scintillating game.

“[Johnson] is a fantastic player, he’s a great player, he works hard and I just wanted to go out there and just give it my all and just play every possession like it was my last and try and get a win, but we couldn’t pull it off today,” Abu said.

Abu said he hasn’t cut his list yet but St. John’s, UConn, Providence, Florida, N.C. State, Kansas State and Louisville are just some of the schools in hot pursuit.

Johnnies head coach Steve Lavin sat courtside flanked by assistants Rico Hines and Tony Chiles to make a statement. Lavin had arrived from Indianapolis where he was watching big men Carlton Bragg and Goodluck Okonoboh, among others.

“I like St. John’s,” Abu said. “They were there early in my recruitment before I was recognized on a national stage or anything like that, so a lot of respect is due to them.”

Providence coach Ed Cooley and his staff have also been involved with Abu and teammate Jared Terrell and haven’t missed a game in two years.

“Same thing with Providence,” Abu said. “I have a good relationship with Coach Cooley.”

N.C. State has also been involved for a while.

“A lot of interest,” Abu said. “[Assistant] coach [Orlando] Early was here [Thursday] and they’re frequently in contact with me, always trying to see how I’m doing and checking in with me. It’s a high amount of interest.”

Abu said he was impressed with what N.C. State did with their forwards, such as Knicks rookie C.J. Leslie.

“He was such a versatile player and he could do many things, that’s something I like in the program,” Abu said.

UConn coach Kevin Ollie has also made Abu a priority.

“I like Connecticut, it’s in my back yard,” he said. “It’s the team I grew up watching.”

Florida is also involved.

“I talk to Billy Donovan,” he said. “What they did with their power forwards is spectacular. A lot of them are in the NBA and they stick in the NBA.”

Louisville has come in late but is also recruiting him.

“They’re coming in late and they’re just trying to really start and build a relationship,” he said. “I guess they’re going to be watching me during the live period. They’re the national champions right now so it’s an honor to be recruited by them.”

Abu plans to cut his list — possibly to 10 — later this summer before eventually getting down to his five official visits.

“It fluctuates all the time,” he said. “I’m not sure right now. Who knows what’s going to happen in the next couple weeks, who’s going to come in and and who’s going to come out. That’s life. So you just gotta see how it goes, and just play basketball.”

He added: “I’m taking all five visits and I’m going to cut down my list to I don’t know what number, but it’s going to happen soon. But I don’t know when.”
