A q for the Redmen community - heroes/ goats

John Kresse divorced his wife Victoria who was either womens head coach or assistant and I have been told a great favorite of the administration. So John had no chance for the SJU job.

Goat: Alpha Bangura.

Hero: Middleton/Minlend/Grant hard nosed, blue collar players.

I agree with these three heroes and also agree that Singleton should be considered. He always came to play. On a side note, if the ref doesn't call him for that T down in NC (Greensboro I believe), we take Duke out of the tourney in the 2nd round. That call still burns me.

The game you're referring to was played at (now-demolished) The Omni in Atlanta. I'll never forget that day, as we buried one of my best friend's earlier that day.

MJ, thanks for the clarification and sorry about your friend.

Ahh yep, forgot about Singleton. He was the precursor to Middleton correct?

Yes, that's right. Singleton graduated in '91 and then Middleton played for us in '92 and '93

I never heard that reason before but its pretty lame letting a personal matter conflict a extremely important business hiring
The mishandling of head coaches hiring, firing & retiring by st.j's is a horror movie with more lives than michael myers! :silly:

There are some really good ones from even my time I hadn't considered. Glover, for one, except he was a far worse fit with his later St. John's teams. But everyone was a bad fit with Omar Cook. Cook was the player who made me get more into basketball, just to quantify why he was far worse than his numbers.

And the decline of Willie Shaw earns serious goat points.

Thanks, all!

Favorite "unsung" guys: Boo Harvey, David Cain, Rob Werdann, Anthony Glover, Lavor Postell,

Disappointments (disliked): Elijah Ingram, Abe Keita (why was Jarvis paying him?), Grady Reynolds (more for off-the-court stuff), Kyle Cuffe. All I can think of off the top of my head.

Glover's mom was all of 5 foot tall and a prison guard. She came up from their Georgia home to be there on Senior night. You know where he got his sense of commitment, work ethic, and gentlemanly ways from! I really admired him and his mom.

Great local heroes: Rockville Center's Beaver Smith and Frankie Alagia. Terrific Redmen!

I grew up in RVC and its a st johns town if there ever was one. Sometimes i think more SJU fans live in RVC than in Queens

theres a few rvc guys on here and I always see familiar faces from around town at the games too. Always nice to see. I remember when i was younger (and the team was more relevant) being on the LIRR platform waiting to go to a weekend garden game w/ my dad and seeing sooooo many people i knew from around town. Not so much anymore but i do still see a few people if i take the train. I had the pleasure of sitting and speaking with coach mahoney on the way to the ND? game last season. I always knew he lived a block away from me but never met him before. Him and his wife both very very nice ppl.

Sundie,
I lived a block away from Coach Mahoney a well. As a matter of fact we spent a lot of time hanging out in his basement when we were kids. I lived at the end of Southard Avenue (174 the last house on the left).

Every person who has ever had a problem with Airport screenings has just begun the process of tracking you down :)

Don't bother, guys, I'm in the witness protection program!

So many all time favorites, some great some not.

Frankie Gilroy (who could forget his reverse jam vs. Duke)

Reggie Carter (a big time transfer) who always seemed to exude class on the court.

George Johnson who was as tough as iron and could do just about everything you could ask of a big forward.

Billy Goodwin - the glue on some very good early 80s teams.

Kevin Williams - just about the most fearless street kid we ever had, called out Patrick Ewick during a game at halfcourt, with a big sardonic grin, as he gestured to him to come over and get your *** kicked. Ewing, as if he knew better, declined.

Bernard Rencher - who could do things with the ball on a 2 on 1, or 3 on 2 break that no one else dare, including a fake behind the back pass on the way to an easy layup.

Bill Wennington - who played hard on the court, and loved to have fun off court.

Billy Schaefer - who never seemed to miss a shot during his senior season, to try to make up for Mel Davis' knee injury.

Glen WIlliams - silky smooth 2 guard.

David Russell on the break.

Of course, not necessarily the best Redmen ever, and many are as memoerable.

Was a frosh during Billy Schaeffer's senior year when he averaged a still school record 24.7 pts per game. He was Chris Mullin before Chris Mullin was as far as shooting be it a right handed version his form being just as for lack of a better term-pretty.
