A q for the Redmen community - heroes/ goats

 Good afternoon, all!

I was compiling some names/ comments for a possible feature on players for St. John's basketball for Rumble in the Garden - a player who may never have been nationally relevant, but are locally loved... or locally reviled. I was going to go with Phil Missere for loved (for being halfway competent when the team was all walk-ons), and for reviled, I was thinking Grady Reynolds, or possibly even Geno Lawrence. Then I realized my sharper Johnnies memories are from 96-on, and some of you might have a player I hadn't thought of that would fit those categories.

Thanks!

(Mods, let me know if this is an inappropriate topic and I'll remove it. Not trying to step on toes here.)

Bootsy was always a personal favorite of mine growing up. I def have to agree with Grady Reynolds, never liked him. Didnt he throw a girl on a swim team down a flight of stairs or something? Im one of the younger guys on here im sure but if you are talking heroes on the court you cant leave out marcus hatten.

Geno not reviled. He was unfortunately just the starting PG and a bit undertalented for this level in a pretty bad time for SJU basketball.

SJU bad guys:

agree on Grady Reynolds, another three names I would add Omar Cook (a 1 hit wonder) , Abe Keita, and
another person I know many posters will disagree with me on is the arrogant ballhog Anthony Mason Jr.

Tyrone Grant and Billy Singleton both came to play every game. Reviled Mo Brown too short, in way over his head and thought he was better than he was.

I would like to include coaches. Brian Mahoney great Assistant should never have been head coach. I don't think he had an out of bounds play.

Great assistant coach? If I recall, he left SJ to become head coach at his alma mater Manhattan where he had three losing seasons. We rehired him and then rewarded him with a head coaching coach when coach C retired. The beginning of the decline of SJ basketball had begun. To think we never interviewed a John Calipari at the time is mind boggling. We deserved everything that happened to us after that bonehead hiring decision.

Goat: Alpha Bangura.

Hero: Middleton/Minlend/Grant hard nosed, blue collar players.

I agree with these three heroes and also agree that Singleton should be considered. He always came to play. On a side note, if the ref doesn't call him for that T down in NC (Greensboro I believe), we take Duke out of the tourney in the 2nd round. That call still burns me.

The game you're referring to was played at (now-demolished) The Omni in Atlanta. I'll never forget that day, as we buried one of my best friend's earlier that day.

Ahh yep, forgot about Singleton. He was the precursor to Middleton correct?

Hero: Charles Minlend. Unhearleded recruit from the Cameroon (of all places). Undersized power forward, who still played the position well in the Big East. He was also a good student, balancing basketball with his studies in St. John's ever-tough pharmacy program.

Also Lavor Postell, known recruit, but not a "blue-chipper" by any means. Great defensive player, and showed steady offensive improvement over 4 years. I believe he was Big East Men's Basketball Academic Player of the Year his senior season.

Goat: Willie Shaw. 2 drug suspensions, including one just before an NCAA Tournament game. Need I say more?

Louie screwed that up by not bringing back John Kresse {charleston} to succeed him,he was a proven winner as head coach to compete in BE.  the vincentians made the same mistake with joyer meyer at depaul.
You dont give a race car to a man who cant drive a ford taurus.
