A Little St. John's Trivia Fun

OK, so I wanted to have a little nostalgic fun so I decided to see if I can test everyone's knowledge on St. John's hoops history. I will post the answers later tonight & this is being done on the honor system (no looking it up on Google, Wikipedia, etc.) There are 10 questions, you can feel free to take a stab at all ten or just one. Have fun, don't research and tonight I will post the answers.

1. St. John's first ever NCAA Tournament win came against which current Big East member?

2. Who is the only person to both serve as head coach & play for St. John's in the NCAA Tournament?

3. Which current Big East team does St. John's have a perfect winning record against in NCAA Tournament play?

4. True or False - St. John's has a losing record against Kentucky in NCAA Tournament play?

5. Which school has St. John's played more times than any other school in the NCAA Tournament ?

6. What future Basketball Hall of Fame Coach played for Kansas in the 1952 NCAA Title game against St. John's?

7. How many coaches has St. John's beaten in NCAA Tournament play who have won an NCAA Title?

8. Which two schools did St. John's play twice in the 90s in the NCAA Tournament?

9. How many Big East teams (current or former) has St. John's played in the NCAA Tournament?

10. Which team did St. John's hold to single digits in the 2nd half of an NCAA Tournament win?

#1 is UCONN (I think they are the answer to #3 also, 1-0)

#6 is Dean Smith

I have 5 for #7, and I'll stick with that (Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Jim Valvano, Bob Knight, and Gary Williams - which only makes up 3 tournaments, BTW - 1952, 1985, and 1999).

#8 is Duke and Ohio St.

I could look up #9, but I won't do it.

#10 is impossible to answer. Princeton would be the obvious, but I don't think we ever played them in the tournament (at least, not when Pete Carill was there).

Excellent work SJU61982. The answer to # 1 is UConn but not the answer to number 3 (I should have clarified that for #3 it was more than just one meeting). Also correct on #6, Dean Smith was a Jayhawk on the 1952 team. Also correct on #7, you got them all. St. John's has beaten at one point all of those 5 coaches who have won NCAA titles. And as ML stated earlier, we played both Duke & Ohio St twice in the 90s.

The remaining answers are as follows:

#3 - St. John's has played & beaten Rutgers both times they have met in the Tournament (1979 & 1983)

#5 - St. John's has played Temple 4 times in the NCAA Tournament (1967, 1979, 1984 & 1990) winning three of them

#9 - St. John's has played the following schools from (or formerly from The Big East) - Rutgers, Georgetown (1985), Boston College (1967), DePaul (1987), UConn, & Louisville (1951).

#10 - In the 1952 NCAA Regional Final, St. John's & Illinois were tied at 18 at halftime, but in the 2nd half the Redmen outscored the Illini' 15-9 for a 61-59 win and St. John's first ever trip to the NCAA Championship game.

Good work by all.

#10 Those numbers would make the final score 33-27 if my math is correct and yours isn't.

Regarding No. 6: Phog Allen? He would been 67 in 1952.

You're right, my math is way off on that one. Ironically I found a link with that boxscore & it has same the bad math as mine lol. So I am guessing the 2nd half score was wrong and therefore I will invalidate that question LOL

Here is the link from ESPN
