8 man Rotation

Since no one here knows what goes on in practice or knows the reason behind the various lineups, I may as well chime in with my own opinion. Everything Lavin is doing, common sense dictates, is based on the failure of more than one player to buy into what it takes to win. He is rewarding hard work, punctuality and following the rules. I see no problem with that. What I do see as a problem is that some or many of them don't respect or fear him enough to follow the rules. This crap, as Lavin himself is suggesting, would not be happening under Bobby Knight. I didn't see a lot of it under Looie either. At least not like this. I don't buy in that Lavin is going through the motions, or that the players have given up. They seem frustrated more than anything. And why does the new, improved less emotional Harrison remind me of Randall P. McMurphy after the lobotomy? These players need to get mad, and soon.

Times have changed. The old school disciplinarians find with some regularity, that today's players don't respond to that sort of thing. Lots of social reasons that we won't get into, but its doubtful Knight could have coached today with the same fire as he did in the 70s. Keady too for that matter. As for Harrison exploding - no thanks - I prefer to see him playing with fire in his belly, controlling his emotions, leading the team, and scoring in the mid to high teens.

Remains to be seen, but the point is that the heavy handed approach to discipline doesn't work in this day and age. We'll see, right?

If you have the respect of the players, then this stuff shouldn't happen. You still can get a bad seed once in a while. All great coaches have had them. If he has a bunch of bad seeds, then it's on Coach for recruiting them.

Old school is sitting players dragging ass in practices. There must be a lot of ass dragging going on! That said, Walter Berry was the king of lazy in practices but Lou knew better. There is something else going on like bad attitudes and not working hard or just not getting the plays. Sampson and Obekpa seem unusually thick. Whatever the case, Lavin chose to sacrifice a game to our biggest foe and it better end there.

Speaking of 8 man rotations, Iowa (12-2, ranked #22) regularly plays with an 11 man rotation

I have always been a fan of playing more players however teams like Iowa and Gonzaga in years past are few and far between. Most stick to 8-9 man rotations.
