Thought the same thing he played 5 years which means he used his free COVID year.

But looking at his first year, the COVID year of 20-21, he played in only 10 games. He might be entitled to a redshrt year that year. Maybe he gets a medical redshirt year.

I thought we’ve been down that road before and anything happened during 20-21, good or bad, doesn’t count. Guys had 4 full years since lol
 
Here is why I think he should not get a 6th year.

Basically the NCAA said if you play 20-21 it won't count against your normal 4 years of eligibility. But if you do not play (see Dingle and Ledlum) you don't get to use that year anytime you want.

Here is the question, he played in 10 games that year. It was a free year to begin with. Do you allow him to use a medical redshirt on a year that was a free year to begin with? Think about it. My guess is no. Let's say he was hurt or just not physically ready to play coming in 20-21. So the team sat him, redshirted him. He doesn't play at all. Then how is that different then Ledlum and Dingle? He can't get that year back, it was a free year.
 
Another problem as Mike Waters points out. He played those 10 games in Feb/Mar which is in 2nd half of season which by definition means you are not eligible for medical redshirt if any of your games occur in 2nd half of season.

I really like Lampkin. In an earlier era he'd have been an NBA player. He's a bit of a character, in a good way. Not a fit for St John's but I won't mind watching him play another year. Hope it's for a tournament team.
