Instead of having five thousand threads about next season, one about our schedule, one about roster, and then the numerous threads made about individual players, I think it'll be better for organization if we just have this official thread about next year.

So welcome to the 2016-2017 season, go St. John's !

I see no reason why we shouldn't at LEAST double our win total from this season. There are literally six new bodies on this team next year, and half of the new members are junior and senior aged guys. But most importantly, we will have an actual playmaking point guard in Lovett. The offense should be very exciting and much improved next year.

I say 5th or sixth place could be our ceiling. hopefully all of the players this year can bulk up especially sima, mussini and yakwe this offseason. Lovett will be the key to next year's success. I am being optimistic but realistic at the same time.

I think we start Lovett, Ponds, Ahmed, Yakwe, and Sima

But we can't run an 11 man rotation. So who's not gonna see time next year or who's gonna get redshirted. Maybe Ellison knows he's gonna get redshirted that's why he looked so sad when he fouled out against Marquette. He looked on the verge of tears.

Reasonable target.

For my sanity I also hope;

* We have no surprise eligibility issues revealed ten minutes before Red/White game.

* The right guy, if any at all, transfers.

* Defense is a focal point of coaching attention in off season preparations.

* Staff puts the "NBA take first good shot" approach on ice & work on sharing the ball.

* Get Sima & Yakwe in one of those John Lucas like NBA camps that have success in skill development.

* Welcome LoVett but don't expect him to be dominating PG out of the box. First year guys playing that spot seldom do. (Yeah I know he has been practicing with the team)

Excited this thread got started- so I see things correctly- what we will have at our disposal currently is:
Guards:
Ponds, Lovett, Mussini, Ellison
Forwards:
Bashir, Yakwe, Freudenberg, Jones, Amar, Williams
Centers:
Sima, Owens

This is if everyone qualifies...doesn't transfer etc...(not including our current walkons)

Rumors about Slice leaving on other board have any legs?

why would spend one year here and then just leave?

Said on other board, would not look good for us.
Perception would be he doesn't think turnaround will come quick and does not want to be part of. Like he made a mistake? Or does not think he can recruit here.

Hopefully nothing to this, but outside of maybe only Yakwe this would be the biggest loss we could have of returning personal.

Wow. I hope the comments on the other board as to the reason is pure speculation.

What happens when a thread about the roster makeup veers down an ugly path. Same for players? Its better to have the individual threads from a moderator standpoint.

I don't know about Owens but I do know Sima and Yakwe need to get much stronger, especially if they expect to defense the biggies in the B.E. Just look at the likes of Groselle who ate us up while he struggled against the Hall last night, all because of a bulky Delgado.

We will see now what Mullin and company can do. The majority of coaching is done in the off-season. Players develop and improve primarily during the off-season. Team chemistry and program culture are largely products of off-season work. The off-season provides the opportunity for real teaching for the correction of recurring errors and the further development of positive attributes. Maybe most important, it allows the players time to bond and leaders to emerge. The SJU staff and players had very little if any opportunity for any of that last season due to the unusually high influx of transfers / freshman. The staff now has a core group of players who got significant minutes this year and/or practiced with the team with which to build on so when Ponds,Bashir and Freudenberg join them there should be a relatively stable foundation laid to integrate them into. I expect a better record for sure but I mostly expect to see a significantly more cohesive unit on the court, especially on the defensive end.

How we do next season reminds me of what Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo said to his crime partner as blood poured out of his face after getting shot in the jaw: "You oughta see the other guy". Yes, we will be better, but how does the rest of the Big East look? Who can we leapfrog?

We have to remember that we are likely to never have 5 guys on the court at the same time that played together. We may go through a lot of lineups. Our lack of strength and experience will be a huge factor. I would guess if they totaled the weight of any 5 we put out there, we will be outweighed by a few hundred pounds. Rebounding will be a question mark. Defense too.

Mullin likely to give his NBA experiment another try, especially with 2 talented shooters coming on board. If our ball movement is good, I expect we take a record number of 3s and make plenty of them. When we shoot well, we will look great. When we don't, we will be pounded inside. If we could have one Johnnie from the past be our final recruit, I'd bring back Mel Davis or Billy Paultz. We need a big body to bang the boards that will leave a mark when he leans on someone.

I get the five guys never having played together part, I also get that the guys coming in are better than the three who are leaving. I also get that two of the "new" guys have been here practicing with the returnees for the whole season. ;)
