2014-2015 Prediction Thread

I'll get it started. I think we will beat Duke at MSG. I think we'll beat Minnesota and split with Gonzaga and Syracuse. Zags are stacked but don't travel well. I have us down for 12-1 for the OOC portion (not sure if I am counting games right). I know that you should always write down a disappointing loss with St. John's somewhere, but we've got four seniors, a junior, and two redshirt sophs and I am a Homer. SOS and RPI could be insane. We have either four or five neutral court games (depending on how LIU game is considered) at MSG or Barclays and the road game at Syracuse. There will also be two games v. Nova and the Duke game.

The Big East will be tough. Playing each team twice is awful, becuase sweeping a team is no easy feat. I feel confident in writing nobody will sweep us, so we'll have to find three sweeps in there to get to 12-6 and finish second to Nova. Depaul becomes a must sweep. I think next likely is Creighton and then either Xavier or Seton Hall. We get SH on the road early in the year and their rookies likely won't be ready for the Big East at that point. We owe Xavier some payback and they will be very different without an NBA ready PG and without Philmore and Martin. Providence is another team we might be able to steal two from...Butler, who I think will compete for an NCAA bid with Jones back, is a team we match up well with. They return 4 of the top 7 players they had when they lost by two to Marquette in the second round of the NCAA tournament two years ago.

12-1 OOC
12-6 Big East

24 wins. Top 20 RPI. Top 10-15 SOS. Five seed.
Adjusted for kool-aid intake...21-10, which I think gets us in unlike last year due to better Big East and tougher schedule with more neutral court games.

Although unlikely, I hope St. John's can pull off an upset against Syracuse this year. I was talking to a Syracuse alumni yesterday and when I told him that his team is my rival, he came back with "Don't you have to win a game once in awhile to make it a rivalry?" So I actually checked the history of the series and St. John's has only won 2 games since the year 2000 (2/19/2000 and 1/21/2007). God almighty.

Considering that in all likelihood the Redmen are going to take a step back next year with Harrison, Greene IV, Branch, and Pointer graduating (possibly Jordan leaving as well), it'd be awesome if they could take a game on the road this year. Wishful thinking, but I'm trying to be positive here.

No way. I'm not brimming with optimism myself, but not 16-15. My prediction honestly is that we will go into big east tournament with work to do to get in again. Just like last year. We will probably enter with 20-21 wins and need to win more to get in. That's what I think I hope I am wrong though.

I'm w you,Jack. We lost Sampson and Orlando, picked up no great recruits. The last couple of years have beat reality into me ,and I have lowered my expectations. A bubble team.

I hope everyone had a great summer

9-3 OOC with losses to Duke, Syracuse and Minnesota. I think we will beat Georgia in the NIT consolation game and win the remainder of our non-league games.

11-7 in the Big East. We split with Nova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Marquette and Butler. Swept by GTown. Sweep Depaul, Creighton and PC.

That puts us at 20-10 and if we go 1-1 in the BET we will be 21-11 and sweating it out on Selection Sunday.

The team is too thin at front court for me to think that we will be dominating the Big East and with our inconsistency problems we have had, I also refuse to give this class anything until they earn it on the court because they have underachieved enormously since theyve been here.

To me the schedule is very similar to last year's - Syracuse and Wisconsin were our big games last year as well as the tournament at the Barclays Center, whereas this year we will have Duke, Cuse, Minnesota and Georgia (arguably a little better). The Big East will be down this year though. It was a disappointment last year but there were still Nova and Creighton hovering in the Top 10-15 all year. This year Nova is the class of the league and after that it is a lot of question marks. So once again, we have replaced UConn, Pitt, Louisville, Cinci with Crieghton Butler and Xavier....our RPI and SOS takes a huge hit and now at 21-11, 11-7 we have to sweat it out on Selection Sunday whereas three years ago we would be a lock. The non-cpnference scheduling HAS TO BE IMPROVED. Duke was a nice addition, but adding a good PAC 12 Team and a good SEC or Big10 team as well as playing in a better tournament than the NIT would do wonders for the team and also give us more TV exposure which can only help recruiting....because let's face it - we need as much help as we can get.

Basically agree. Although i think the St. Mary's game will be tough and sweeping Providence will not be easy. I would say we make it to the quarterfinals of the NIT this year.

You could make the argument this is a tournament team, or the HC is going to get canned midseason bc of middling performances. That wide spectrum is not something you want but at least we won't be surprised by anything.

If you were to make a prop bet for "odds St. John's makes NCAA tournament," what would they be? Forget wins and losses bc there are so many more factors than just the record. My line would be:
yes +150
no -180

"Palpable Buzz" Jon?

@JonRothstein: Several Big East coaches believe St. John's will be an NCAA team in 2015. Red Storm need strong November + December to build resume. #SJUBB

Didn't these same coaches say we were an NCAA team in 2014? I would rather say we sucked, give us some bulletin board material and we go blow the doors of them.

Rothstein's ok, but this tweet definitely falls under the category of "No sh*t, Sherlock." Could say the exact same thing about half the teams in the BE.

11-7 big east
9-4 ooc

20-11, will string along those of us who have hope all the way till the end.

With NCAA bid, Lavin gets re-upped

No bid, Lavin flies the coop before the ax falls.

20 wins = no bid 23 or 24 is a lock.

Here's a hypothetical question: assume your scenario above plays out. But before the ax can fall, Lavin somehow manages to land Briscoe and a few other high-quality recruits to go with him. Do you re-up him? Personally, I would say yes--reluctantly. And with the proviso that he gets another Dunlap-type in the door.

Have to agree with your front court analysis. How much offense can we expect to get from Obepka? Thomas, a board banger. And Jones, who knows?

Hopefully, Lavin's extension is announced before the season begins and it is no longer an impediment to recruiting. Briscoe, Diallo and (possibly) Sampson announce for us in the Spring...and we all live happily ever after.

I think if he nails a great recruiting class I'd agree with you even if this season is another miss.
