1986 Big East Final

Here it is, the complete broadcast (via ESPN Classic) of one of the great wins in Redmen history.

What a great night. We had seats 8 rows back to the left of the basket where Ronnie Ro hit the jumper to give us our only lead of the game (and the only lead that counts, at the end). I was so excited, I was jumping up and down and hit one of my biddies in the face, knocking out one his contacts,

Later that night we went to Runyons on 2nd (boy I miss that place along with the original on East 50th) where we ran into some Nova fans who were really happy that we beat "the heathen snowmen from the north" (little did they know that a little over 3 weeks later that they would reach the ultimate heights as a fan of college basketball).

Wound up closing the place that night with the owner Healy (who one of my buddies was good friends with and who Mike Lupica called "the greatest Yankee fan") talking St. John's, Big East hoops (if I remember correctly Healy was a Nova fan) and Yankee baseball.

I would love it if someone uploaded the 1991 & 1999 NCAA Tournament games, the ones that we won that is.

Joe Healy & main bartender was Richie Mannion, a friend from my old Bronx neighborhood.

Got in big trouble with my first wife after this one. Was very excited about the win and my ex makes the comment that I seem more excited about it than I did about her cousin having a baby that day. I replied in my best Dice Clay sneer "Yeah Right". Beginning of the end? We'll never know. LOeffingL.

Age may be tweaking your memory a bit, 85 (I know it is mine): Unless I misinterpreted you, it was one year earlier -- not three weeks later -- that Nova fans reached the ultimate heights. Regardless, we all have great post-game memories of that night.

Extra special thanks, SJU61982. Had forgotten how Glass kept us in the game in the first half, and how much of a plus Marco Baldi was coming off the bench and contributing big time, including 4-4 from the charity stripe. Great stuff! (And like everyone else, great memories of celebrating afterwards.)

You're welcome, but full credit should go to whoever loads this stuff on to youtube. All I'm responsible for, is copying and pasting the video onto this site.

Thanks Redken my memory about following next three weeks is faulty as Louisville led by Purvis "Never Nevous" Ellison won it that year. The rest of the memory is good though.

Knew you'd take it in the spirit it was given. Hey, our memories of great wins (as well as disappointing loses) may not be as accurate as we think they are, but what the hell ... they're still great memories.

Every local recruit should be shown this game.Nothing like winning the Big East tournament in front of your family and friends in MSG.

They would probably say "Have you done anything this century?".

And I would tell them: "Wouldn't it be great if you are the one that made it happen like it was 1986"

Hey, we did win the title in this century: 2000. Sure, it was 17 years ago, but who's counting? :)

Every time I see the 86 BE Final, I keep thinking , what if Walter Berry had stayed his last Year with Mark Jackson in 87?

And, coincidentally, I still wonder why Louie didn't get more out of Berry in the 85 Semi Finals against G/town? Possibly the Truth was in foul trouble? i don't recall but, with the Box and 1 on Mullin, Walter should have been go to guy.. He wasn't much of a factor as I recall.. Of course, everyhing on that team pretty much ran thru CM Anyway. Lastly, I always thought Jackson was better than Moses running the team, even as a soph.

Berry was a much improved player in his second year. Partly because Mullin and Wennington were gone and maybe it takes JUCO's a year to reach their potential. Hope for Ahmed.

Good Point.. Berry was still a Elite Player in 85 but, as you said, CM was the Straw that stirred the Drink. Walter wasnt really highlighted in the offense in 85 but, that's one of the things about Louie. He was loyal, to a fault on occasion, when a Strategy change could have affected the Game's outcome.. Louie didn't really have a Answer for the Box and 1. Remember too, Mahoney and Ron Rutledge were the Asst Coaches. Not much cerebral going on there either.

Wasn't there a whole big thing about when the next century starts, either 2000 or 20001, when we were all concerned that computers might crash? ;) :)

To borrow a favorite phrase of our new president, many, many people tell me that the century began with 2000.
