13th ship

I thought about the LJ debacle today and put things back into perspective. The LJ loss is huge, but I think the sentiment is based on the idea that there isn’t any talent left that’s worth filling the last spot.

Looking back at last year, we landed Champagnie May 29th, and Rutherford and Dunn after that. All those guys ended up being huge contributors on the team last season. With that in mind, with only one ship to fill it’s possible to say that we could easily still land starter-level talent still at this point.

Trying to get the negativity of today’s events behind us, who should we go after with the 13th ship because we landed an All Big East Freshman at this time last year?

Fair points. But remember this year the off season cycle began a month earlier than normal. A lot of jockeying has already been done. Just another point to consider.

Personally I’d try to get a 21 kid to go back into the 20 class.

I’d call Justin Smith ASAP! Indiana grad transfer, was the teams best defender and 2nd best rebounder. He announced he was transferring on the 22nd, so we are definitely behind on the long list of schools. Better athlete than LJ, would upgrade us defensively. Averaged 10 ppg and 5 rebounds per game. Last big 10 transfer we had worked well for us.

A year ago, Rutgers went through a similar saga. Eugene Omoruyi (not related to Cliff who will be a frosh there this fall), was their leading scorer, rebounder and defender. He was not a Pikiell recruit. Seemingly out of nowhere, after his junior season, he announced that he is transferring to Oregon. He sat out this past season and will suit up as a senior at Oregon this fall. The fans went nuts and were pissed, to say the least. Pikiell then brought in a grad transfer from Stony Brook, Yeboah, who he recruited there but never coached him. Yeboah had a solid but unspectacular year and Rutgers had the best season that they have had in many years. They relied a lot on Eugene in the past and became a better TEAM after he left. Scuttlebutt after he left suggested that he didn't get along all that well with some of his teammates and team chemistry improved. Now, Rutgers is a preseason top 25 team in many early polls.

The way LJ is leaving St John's sucks but it isn't the end of the world. LJ did not have a great season last year and often played out of control. I wish him well in whatever he chooses to do but I believe that the sky is not falling at St John's. We have a great coach, a great staff, a good nucleus of returning players and some intriguing newcomers ready to join the team in the fall. Perhaps CMA will find a grad transfer perhaps not. Either way, we still have a competitive team and may have better chemistry on the floor without LJ. I am still optimistic that we will have a very good season (assuming there is one) in 2020-21.

WE ARE................. ST JOHN'S!!!!!

Smith is a MAC Irvin AAU kid who Illini is pushing for. It makes sense because of locale and positive relationship Mac Irvin has with new Illini regime. Doubt we have a chance, but we’ll see.

Illinois and Indiana are in same conference. Is that transfer allowed? Do they have different rules than Big East and ACC?

Don’t ever recall intra-conference transfers in BE and ACC

Yes you can in the Big Ten. Nojel Eastern just did it, Purdue to Michigan.

I have to give Illinois credit. They are out there on the trail hard. They are really after Kenpang and Etienne too.
Why is Illinois suddenly the new Duke? They are landing everyone they want and more. Wtf?
From an assistant standpoint NYC's own and former Pitt, Memphis and Kentucky assistant Orlando Antigua is integral to their plan

$$$ is integral too

Anyone who's paying attention knows the reason Illinois is now recruiting better than ever. It comes down to (lots of) dollars and cents.

i don't know if im the minority here but I don't any any player here that does not WANT to be here. I also don't want any player here who's just looking for a payday. I want blue collar players who have something to prove, where else could you do that but in MSG & NYC?
who are some possible candidates to fill that LJ void? Im thinking we target another PF. Who's out there?
There is no void to fill. LJ was going to take a step back this year in minutes played. It just means more minutes for guys like cole, duke, champaignie, Williams etc.

And in the long run, those guys getting more minutes will be better for this team as they are all studs that will play huge for us this year. Losing LJ is addition by subtraction.

Yes we should why wait, just mo LJ played us it’s not like he was a top player in the country.dont not think he will be missed from a stand point of offensive production Cole will fill that void and then some

Just saw Carte'Are Gordon on a transfer list. Transferred from St. Louis after the 2018-19 season to DePaul but never played for the Blue Demons. He played 6 games at NW Florida State Juco last season.
Decent stats at St. Louis and was a Top 75 player out of HS I think..
No clue but he may be a head case. He'll be a junior I think. A sit-out?
Wonder what Van Macon thinks of him?

Another guy who changes schools like most people change socks

I'm sure this late in the season, the transfer market must look like a food fight.
Seems decent players still on the board, but the better ones have 10 - 20+ colleges clamoring after them.
I'm sure the Staff is plowing through their Rolodex's. Lol.
Regardless, I think we'll still be competitive.
