10 games left

I can't stand when guys come on here talking about winnable games. They say the same stuff after every loss.

According to some, we shouldn't have a loss on our record.

Anyways OT, Phil should be regulated to the bench so he gets to know what it'll feel like next year.

Start Sheed and groom him to be the leader so he comes into next year knowing that it's his team. He took over the sidelines against a Creighton, yelled at Dom and showed signs of being a vocal leader. Something Jakarr has not done (probably just his personality).

Start Obekpa. He should never even had been benched earlier in favor of Sanchez.

Give Hooper more consistent minutes. Hate him or love him, he's going to be here for awhile.

By the way, is it asking too much of Lavin to put on a tie and a proper pair of dress shoes for these last 10 games? He looks like a bum—I’ve even noticed fans from other team’s message boards commenting on it.

Is it really asking too much for him to dress professionally, set a good example for the kids and represent the school in a professional manner?

I'm all for criticizing his coaching but your going to criticze the way he dresses? If you're referring to Butler game you know he wore sneakers for coaches vs cancer. As all coaches did around the country.

No- I am not referring to the Butler game, I realize that was a special occasion. I am referring to the fact that the guy never wears a tie or dress shoes, period. I agree, in the grand spectrum of problems facing this team, it’s not a high priority. Still, there’s a reason why every other coach in the nation puts on a tie for game time. It shows respect for the school they are representing and the position they’ve been granted. Just my opinion.

Lavin could wear a Gumby costume and I wouldn't care if we are getting wins.

I don't have a problem with what he wears. Some of these other coaches wear horrible suits anyway

What our coach wears is probably the least of our concerns right now. But since you brought it up, I don't think that the 'style' that Lavin supports right now makes him look like a bum. Rick Majerus, Bob Huggins, and Bob Knight are all coaches that more often than not went without a tie, and I'm sure that there are others. Hell, even Louie went without a tie for a few games.

He is going for the cool, relaxed look, which fits perfectly for someone who is coaching in NYC. There is nothing wrong with having a little swagger to your step...

He has worn dress shoes a lot this year. Bob Huggins wear warm up suits. Mike Brey mock turtlenecks that Lavin has cracked out this year. You are entitled to your opinion for sure but its a little wacky if you ask me. Some coaches don't wear ties too. Some people take off their jackets as the game starts. Gary Williams would sweat thru his shirts. Buzz Williams and Pitino and Pearl are known for wearing embarrassingly colored jackets. I mean you make it seem like he's showing up with a hoody and jeans hanging off his ass.

* And honestly so what if he wore white sneakers every day. He overcame cancer and if he wants to support that cause by raising awareness, then thats awesome.

I hate ridiculously stupid posts...unless they are in jest. That one seemed serious. Sometimes I post something stupid, without a winky, to see if people will pick up on the sarcasm. Maybe, just maybe, that was the intent.

For the OP's sake, and credibility!, I hope you're correct. ;)

If we weren't embarrassingly underperforming this year, I wouldn't have been forced to take this admittedly offbeat mental detour into Lavin's wardrobe.

But just for the record, Lavin isn’t wearing a tie anymore because he feels it gives him “decision-making and clarity at a higher level.” And of course, the results speak for themselves!

"For the rest of my career I don't anticipate going back to a tie or dress shoes ever again," Lavin said. "It's nice we're 6-1 with sneakers. It started with the Coaches vs. Cancer to bring attention to a great cause....But it struck me after that game in terms of comfort with the shoes and without the tie, I felt I was doing a more effective job of teaching. You know, just in terms of breath.

"It's so basic - there isn't anything more essential than breath and oxygen. So I felt like decision-making and clarity was at a higher level when I didn't have the tie on."

This was from his first year.

It should be obvious now, that the real reason he was doing it, was because of his cancer diagnosis. That comment was just a way of covering it up (admitadly, not a very good way of doing it, but still, I get what he was trying to do there).

StJohns will likely go 6 & 4 the remainder of the regular season and finish 18/13 overall and 8/10 in conference heading into the BigEast Tournament:
Marquette ........ win
@ Providence ... loss
Creighton ..... loss
@ SetonHall ..... win
Georgetown .... win
Butler ........... win
@ Villanova ... loss
Xavier .... ... win
DePaul ..... . win
@ Marquette ... loss

Wait til next year use to be the mantra of the Brooklyn Dodgers , losing the World Series all those times to the Yankees.

10 games left as this thread is, also implies some thought to planning for next season, while suggesting the remainder of the schedule be used to bolster skills of next year's prime players. I agree it's a good idea...

What does that mean though? As several commented, Jordan and Obepka need to receive more minutes than currently. I think consensus is Sanchez was way overrated and isn't a compelling player to continue to think he should start? Giving CO his minutes.

Jordan has been getting minutes but, has had to deal with early foul trouble limiting his PT. Maybe, he needs to learn to play with 2 fouls and not be pulled. Especially since that means GREENE gets to command the ball movement, when Branch is on the bench too. Usually resulting from clanking his jumper and not finishing his lay ins at the rim. He misses those a lot.

i think it's time to anoint Jordan as the team leader, which means, of course, Harrison accepting a lesser role in the offense primarily. Let Jordan get 12-15 shots a game, driving to the hoop or pulling up for a J. His Jumper needs work and getting him more shots should help him improve. Harrison? 6 or 7 shots a game should be his limit unless Greene spends more time on the bench. In which case, let DLO take a few shots that Greenie usually takes. I'd limit Greene to 3-4 shots a game and monitor his minutes to effect that.
Pointer, should point the ball to the basket, only on a uncontested breakaway and never attempt any sort of outside shot, since it's akin to a turnover, when it misses. I like Pointer and Greene with only 10 minutes a game each.. Or, less if possible..

Sampson needs more FG attempts too. Though, not from the corner, where he rarely connects. His elbow jumper isn't too bad and needs just fine tuning, if he's ever going to the NBA. 12-15 shots a game should be par for Jakarr. I'd like him to go to the rim, even more than now and also, learn to be a put back demon on missed shots of the other guys. Like the monster dunk against Creighton.

Balamou, next year should relegate Greene to even less minutes. He's a better all around player anyway. Hooper , unless Lavin finds a Heslip, Wregge, Craft,Hardy type player, should get more shots somehow. Let's find out if he can make enough to be the 3 pt specialist role. If not, about the same minutes that Marco is getting this year.

Of course, all these plans would require some sort of management from the bench.. Steve would have to make tough decisions on Greene and Pointer and Harrison to a extent, giving the team leadership to Jordan.

I think it could work ..

That's probably a good prediction. And, maybe get us a look from the NIT, if we score a win or 2 in the BE tourney..

If we finish poorly, do we get the number 1 draft pick?

Here's my breakdown:
6-0 at home.
2-2 split on the road at worst, hoping for 3-1.

20 or 21 wins. Need 1-2 in the tournament to get in. NOva and Providence games are the keys to the season.

OMG! I know this is from a few years ago, but ONLY Steve Lavin could actually say this without getting laughed off.

People......he actually said that he can breath better without a tie, resulting in better teaching. What a tool!
