I hope so, Mike, but they are always underrated and Cooley is a very good coach
Besides, my former neighbor is a Friar so there's always a wager on these games
He always brags about having been Jimmy Walker's roommate at Providence
We need to shut him up once and for all!!
GO ST JOHN'S!!!
I haven't seen Providence but they are a bad matchup for us on paper. They are always loaded with rugged 6'6-6'10 guys. Posters on here are acting like a marginal Big East player like Femi Olujobi is a beast...wait until they see some of the guys on Providence.

And as is our luck, AJ Reeves will be active for them in the next ten days or so and ready to play against us.
Fact is, no player we’ve seen has abused us the way Femi did. You don’t have to go down swinging with that one. He killed us and it hurt.
I didn't watch the game after Ponds was ruled out. I knew the outcome. IMO, we would have beat them by around 20 with Ponds, and the two guys that had to pick up the slack from Ponds were he two guys that could have helped neutralize Femi had they been able to concentrate on that aspect.

Ponds affects everything from thee point shooting % to how we defend. There hasn't been a more important player to a team than I've witnessed in my lifetime of watching college basketball.
lol really? Your prediction that he is more SF couldnt have been more off. HIs base made our guys look like middle schoolers.
Who is more of a SF? I don't hand out those titles to big men easily. That is a huge compliments coming from me. I said he was goofy.

Seriously?
Seriously what

If Trey Jones remains out, we have a real shot against Duke. He makes them go on both ends of the floor, especially defensively on the ball.

lol do you read my posts? Labeling a big man as a three is one of the biggest compliments I would give. I can't imagine I'd give Femi such a compliment. I said he was goofy.

I think we will be just fine against them in the rematch if we have Ponds. Simon and Heron will do just fine on him if they don't have to worry about creating and carrying the scoring load.
Imho, Georgetown, Butler, Xavier, Creighton & Providence are all reasonably possible sweeps for us. If we get 3 of them and split with other 6 teams, we'd be 12-6; get 2 sweeps and split with other teams we're 11-7. In either case we'd be in top 4 of BE regular season and in excellent shape for a bid. Need to avoid being swept by anyone.
Duke is a also a possible W given that Jones is very unlikely to play.
Of those teams, Providence is probably the toughest to beat 'away', although all road games are challenges.
'Beating Duke'?!!?
Gawd, that'd be great for many reasons, but as a poster said earlier, the Duke game is a high-profile exhibition in February and might help even in a tough loss--although those are the toughest to swallow.
Ironically, IF we do beat Duke would that make us more vulnerable to lose at a likely tough road game @ Marquette?
Aren't BEC games more important at this point in a critical season?

I’ve watched duke play a handful of times this year, and I must say, we will have a tough time getting stops against Zion and Bolden down low, but duke has some real weaknesses on the other end.

They give big minutes to these two white boys who can’t cover anybody. Jack White, one of them, single handedly lost the game against Cuse. He got abused on the defensive end by Tyus Battle, and also went 0-10 from 3.

No way we win in Cameron, IMO, but I think we can hang around for awhile

All this talk about who we should sweep is a nice plan, but difficult to pull off. There are no nights off in the Big East. We play well, we will win more than half of our games. We play so-so, anyone can beat us, whether at home or on the road. I don't look at this one game at a time, but in 10 minute stretches at a time. The positive is that we only stunk the court up one time, and that was without Ponds. We have stunk up the court for 5 to 10 minute stretches here and there. That happens with everyone. To me, with a little more discipline, this team would be much better. Clark must have run into the 3 point shooter 5 times this season. Heron has had his fair share too. We are a team of streaks, and don't fare very well in a war of attrition. That's what Seton Hall did the last 6 minutes, and Depaul did all game.
The frustrating part is that this team would have beaten DePaul 99 out of 100 times with Ponds at home and we did actually beat Seton Hall. So we should be 17-1, 5-1.

Anything less than 3-3 would have been panic time. Now they need to start getting wins. 6 games in and the opportunities to sweep teams is becoming less and less likely. Butler and Gtown HAVE to be sweeps now.

I've always felt this team would beat Duke. It just seems in its DNA to win a February game of that magnitude.
If they want in the ncaa tourny, they better win the next 2.
If Syracuse can win at Duke, why can't we?

Syracuse beat them because of the 2-3 zone that they play. It forced Duke to shoot from outside and that’s their only weakness. They’re not great jump shooting team. Syracuse also rebounds really well out of that zone and their 7’2 center Chuckwu the transfer from Providence really dominated inside especially the last ten minutes of the game.

Agree. To piggyback your post, as most already know, Duke was missing Tre Jones and Cam Reddish. Duke was in control of the game before Jones' injury, and Jones was leading the way with his stifling defense.

Chukwu played his best game as a collegiate on Monday night.

Let's not act like SJU has not had Lady Luck on their side either a few times. The missed foul at the end of the VCU game up 1 when VCU could have conceivably gotten 3 free throws needing 2 to win game. The Georgetown game...Georgetown up 4 with 17 seconds left. How many times do you think a team loses in that situation? Well Georgetown found a way.

Also the program has had 3 straight losing seasons with no consequential games late in the season in 4 years. Not sure what "DNA" this program has that says they should win a game against Duke in February at Cameron.

Bill Bradley at Princeton had a bit of an impact. My paranoia keeps pointing to Providence as the possible source of our season going sour.

To be fair most folks don't remember many teams that rely on a single player to that extent (cough, cough Steph Curry), because most folks only remember teams that make it far in the dance. That's why we all remember Steph's jr year and not his Senior year NIT appearance and 2nd round exit. Others fade from memory just like that. This team is unlikely to make the sweet sixteen so Shamorie's exploits will never reverberate like Bird's or Curry's. Kemba's last year was similar, at least in the post season though his supporting cast was better than both Bird's and Curry's. Dwyane Wade and David Robinson also come to mind.
