Possible Coaching Candidates

I was actually agreeing with you Fordham. I’m just ready to win and with the NIL around I have no reason to care about that stuff any more, which is my point. Bring the coach in who can re-engage Repole and turn this unwieldy ship around. I wanna win.
Yeah maybe but it seems you have shortchanged how good a coach Pitino is even with his personal faults.

If I recall you tried to argue when SJU hired Anderson 4 years ago and passed on Pitino that Anderson was actually a better coach.

Why does an assistant under Pitino has to take over the reigns once he leaves?
He doesn't but it would be nice to have an associate head coach who would have learned from the best and who could be a candidate if the program was successful.
THAT would exclude a Balado or a Masiello.
Fact is we don't know who he would think is critical for a Big East staff.
We're just shooting the bull until something is announced.

I feel like some of us are looking for multiple reasons to not want Pitino, which I personally think is insane. We need to be sick of sucking.
Maybe we sucked for so freaking long that now some got to the point of where it's acceptable, and their oki with it.

Me? I'll admit that I'm a miserable loser, you'll never mistaken me for Oscar DeLa Hoya. He would catch a beating and still would be smiling.

If you don’t hire the right head coach, you will never groom an associate head coach because that associate would have also failed and also be fired.

I am still waiting for the dynamic associate from Mahoney to Anderson, and everyone in between to appear.

Literally 4 years ago we got turned down by Bobby Hurley, Porter Moser rejected an offer than would have paid him 2.5x what he was making at the time and Ryan Odom didn’t even want to interview with us. We were actually pretty happy when we ended up getting a guy who the fans at his last stop named “Mediocre Mike”.

4 mediocre years later and the job is no more desirable now than it was then but the stars just so happen to align that one of the best coaches to ever do it who still has some juice left in that fastball wants the job and some people here don’t want him? That is actual insanity

You really think hiring Pitino carries the same short term risk in terms of failure as Speedy?

That is a joke right?
Did I say that anywhere??
I think I've been pretty clear from previous posts that no other coach could match the immediate impact in the media and fan interest.
I've argued with those of you who took a moral high ground against hiring him. My avatar should also give you a hint where I lean.
But we are St. John's and I never underestimate that what could go wrong will go wrong.
After Pitino, the best coach available would be Chris Mack but I doubt he would have the same impact that Pitino would have locally.
Claxton would be my third choice but as we all know by now, never go with the 3rd choice. 😉🙃

You did when u said we are all making assumptions.

I took it as assuming Speedy wins at SJU carries the same level of assumption as Pitino. If that is not what u meant then I stand corrected.

So after Iona losers in ncaa, whenever they lose, how long do we gotta wait for Pitino to be announced officially as SJU coach?

I'll go with 48hrs, but hoping within 24hrs.

The whole point in hiring Pitino is that he would all but guarantee that we will NOT be back here in 4 years coming off of a bunch of 16-16 seasons looking for a whole new coach.

Yes Pitino won't be here for 10 years but he can get this rolling and make it a desirable job.
Explain why we can guarantee we won't be 16-16 with Pitino in 4 years, but can't make that guarantee with any other hire?

Are you saying that there is 1/3 chance that within four years he will have an NCAA violation, 1/3 chance he will be right on the NIT/NCAA tournament border, and 1/3 chance he will be extremely successful? Because that's what happened in his career.

I get it every offseason hope springs eternal. Every recruit is going to be Malik Sealy and ever coach is going to John Wooden. But, the idea it's has to be Pitino or battling DePaul for last place is just not accurate.

The argument for Pitino is: St. John's has the rare opportunity to hire a hall of fame coach relatively on the cheap because a) he comes with NCAA baggage b) he's 70+ years old and c) Football school openings are looking elsewhere (ie we may be his biggest/best/most prestigious option). This may be the only opportunity to bring in a huge name with huge success within our budget. Because of this we believe the upside in the hire outweighs the potential downside.

That is 100% the argument I think everyone can agree on. It's just where you fall on the spectrum from "not worth the risk" to "DUDE if we can take PC to the final four imagine what he can do at SJU"

But all this "Pitino is a guarantee winner day one", "final four 3 times in 4 years" is the kind of nonsense that's going to lead to disappointment.
