I watched the entire Rutgers-Hofstra game. Sure, Rutgers was disappointed by not getting an NCAA bid, but they clearly came to play and didn't "mail it in" as you sometimes see in an NIT game. The RAC was packed and loud. Rutgers led for most of the game. Every time they had a little breathing room, Hofstra kept their composure, fought their way back into the game and eventually won in overtime.

Don't get me wrong. My fingers are crossed that Pitino is named the next head coach at St John's. But I was very impressed with Speedy Claxton. The way his players responded throughout the game in a hostile environment is a direct reflection of his coaching style and ability. He has a very bright future in this business and will get a high major job in the near future if he is inclined to make such a move.

Claxton is a cautionary tale. Everyone is overly excited because they witnessed Hofstra beat a good, but badly slumping Rutgers.

When we had this discussion in January, everyone was fawning over the job Pickiel was doing at Rutgers.

If it isn’t Pitino, the gap between whoever is #2 is extremely wide. The only other name that comes closer to Pitino is Chris Mack (and even he is a distant second).

Rick Pitino, I'd say is in the top 2 all time for college coaches.
Wooden and him, you could even say he's the top college coach of all time.

John did it with UCLA. Look at what Rick did starting with PC..

In my opinion, if you don't want Rick, then you don't want to win.

Going to argue morals and all that? He paid for his sins and did his time, now he's coming here and we're going to win, don't like it? Tough.

No argument from me. I stated that I am really hoping that Pitino gets the St John's job. I'm not suggesting that Speedy is anywhere near as good of a choice. Right now, he's a neophyte in the head coaching ranks. I merely pointed out that he appears to be a young up and coming coach who could very well have a bright future down the road.

Speedy’s basketball experience compares favorably with other realistic non Pitino candidates.

Speedy played 9 seasons in the NBA, served as a college scout for the Golden State Warriors, served 8 seasons as an assistant at Hofstra, and now 2 seasons as D1 head coach compiling a near 70% win record over his 2 seasons, being name 2023 CAA Coach of the Year, and winning the Colonial regular season title. Not too shabby.

What I like best about Speedy is that he is young, respectful of StJohn’s, (I am told) he wants the StJ’s job, and he is not some generic mid major coach looking to move to a P6 position with higher salary.

if not Pitino , there is no better realistic candidate than Speedy.

2 years of college HC experience is very thin on the resume side.

But more importantly can SJU afford him. I heard they may not fire Mike Anderson because of his buyout and then they would presumably have to pay Hofstra a buyout and then sign Speedy, do you know if SJU can afford that?

If Pitino happens, I can 100 percent see Speedy here six years from now. So I think everyone should be a Hofstra fan except when we've scheduled them, and root for 27 wins a season from them. I don't see them play where I am, but I assume you guys out there definitely get their games televised.
