Shanley, you got a home run candidate waiting in the wings at Iona, I'm sure Rick is aching for one last chance at glory which would be another championship.
Will you call the man and give him a chance to win it at SJU, or not call him, and watch him go to G-Town or another school and watch him win a championship there.
To many SJU fans that would be unforgivable.

Your choice in March.

Cragg certainly has to have seen/heard the calls for Pitino, but wonder if Shanley has... likely not a social media follower..

From what I have been told Shanley is not afraid to and has made tough choices. He is not afraid to spend money for the greater good of the university. He loves basketball and understands it importance to this university. It does not mean he will go in the direction of Pitino, but does mean the school has a real experienced President who is not afraid to lead.

A few points:

1. I am not as sure as everyone else that this will be CMA’s last year at St. John’s; it depends upon his contract terms. If he has three years guaranteed on his contract (no one knows for sure) then I anticipate he will be back. St. John’s will not eat $7.5 +M. I doubt that they would eat $5M.

2. Pre- President Shanley I would say that there was a 0% chance Pitino would be hired at StJohn’s. With Fr. Shanley if there is a new hire I would say there is still less than a 50% chance that St. John’s pursues Coach Pitino.

3. Given their common Providence College ties, and the fact that Rick’s son Richard graduated from Providence College I believe it is a safe assumption that Fr. Shanley and Rick Pitino have met on one or more occasion.

Let me throw a monkey wrench into the mix. Does Louie still have his rather powerful seal of approval on who becomes coach. In the past it prevented several candidates from getting the job including Jay Wright.

I mean I'm all for player input.
But there's no reason a backup power forward should be a decision-maker.

Let Mike Repole pick the coach as he pays off CMA going out the door.

"Home-run" candidate for basketball coach, good one! Ignore the 23 point blowout to Quinnipiac yesterday... SMH.

Iona gave him his shot at redemption, no need for us to be so foolish.

What exactly did he do to Jay Wright?

I forget but wasn't Jarvis coach then ? I never knew of an Anti Jay thing. Anti Calipari was well documented here

I believe Jay only had one winning season at Hofstra when we fired Fran and hired Jarvis. Bad timing!

If Ed Manetta got his way he would have hired Calipari when Jarvis was in talks regarding the Wizards job. Bad luck!

The only problem with hiring Jay Wright was the timing. After Wright made his first run to the NCAAs with Hofstra, Jarvis played footsie with the Wizards. (We were coming off the final 8 in his first year followed by the BE championship, so he was a hot commodity.) If he had jumped at that time, most on this board assumed that we would have hired Wright immediately - and the history of Johnnies basketball would have changed immeasurably. As it turns out, Jarvis and the Wizards never came to terms, he stayed at SJU and Wright left for Nova after the following season - and we've been mired in mediocrity ever since.

You are correct.
But just to add, I think it was more than an assumption that Wright was going to be hired.

Apparently, he had accepted the job because Jarvis was going to the Wizards since they had a deal in place. Also, Mike Francesa was at the time tuned in to the university, and he also vouched for Wright.

But Jarvis being Jarvis, pissed Jordan off last minute with some demand and Jordan walked away.

Jarvis then returned to SJU (since Wright getting hired was contingent on Jarvis leaving).

The rest is (miserable) history.
