Halftime here at Carnesecca and the Rick Pitino era could not have started any better. St. John’s is up 54–34 on Quinnipiac and honestly it hasn’t even been that close. From the opening tip, the Red Storm came out flying—tight defense, crisp ball movement, and nonstop energy.
They jumped out to a 7–0 lead in about two minutes and forced Quinnipiac to call a quick timeout, but that didn’t slow anything down. By the time the first media timeout hit, it was 19–4. The team shot something like 8-for-10 to start and turned every Bobcat mistake into points. The defense looks way more active than last year—constant pressure, hands in the passing lanes, and everyone buying in.
Freshman Ian Jackson looks the part—confident, quick, and already creating offense. Dillon Mitchell might’ve been the best player on the floor that half. He’s everywhere—finishing inside, rebounding, even had a huge dunk that got the crowd going. Hopkins and Ejiofor are pounding them inside too. Quinnipiac tried a zone and a little press, but it didn’t matter. We’re slicing through it with movement and patience—no panic, just good basketball.
There was a small stretch where Quinnipiac made a mini run, but Pitino’s guys never lost control. Monroe, their best player, can’t get anything going. Every time he touches the ball, there’s a red jersey on him instantly.
If St. John’s keeps playing this way, they’ll hit 90 easy. You can feel the difference already—this team looks disciplined, confident, and hungry. The crowd is into it too; it feels like the old days again.
If this is a preview of what Pitino’s got cooking, it’s going to be a fun year.
