New York Mets 2025 Season

The way the Yankees are handling Volpe reminds me of the way Cashen and crew handled Greg Jeffries.
Met veterans mocked Jefferies for running out routine grounders full tilt, kind of like Pete Rose. At the time I hoped a single veteran would have told Met players to leave the kid alone. But leaders on that team were already in career tailspins and Gregg was on his own.

Once again Mendoza pushing all the wrong bullpen buttons. Ryne Stanek again? Why? Now down 5-2 we are going to Kevin freaking Herget. 7th inning we are in a tight game it’s time we started pushing some people. Only 20 games or so to go and we are playing like it’s a game in May. No urgency.

after the game, I decided the way to handle my depression given the outcome was to have a few laughs, so I am now watching another baseball game--Savannah Bananas on TRU right now. They have sold out San Diego's stadium which is nothing new about their attendance numbers.

I sort of remember it the other way around where there were times he did not run it out (you would probably know and remember that stuff more than me) and remember them mocking him for other things including swinging a bat while in a pool. He was the favored child even before taking a MLB at bat and was treated with kid gloves which caused resentment among the veterans. He also did some childish things that the veterans didn’t like.

Speaking of childish, I remember Jeff Kent throwing a tantrum and refusing to get dress and get on the bus for a charter flight road trip because as part of the rookie hazing, someone swapped out his regular clothes for some multicolored outfit. They wound up giving him his clothes back. That did not sit well with the veterans either.

We tried to go see them later this month and the wife told me it was a grand and that was a month ago. The new Harlem Globetrotters.

Jefferies would slam his helmet to the ground when he made out on a pitch he thought he should have crushed, and that annoyed veterans. I think there is truth in veterans resenting him as anointed, but the Mets had a long history of doing that, notably Strawberry just prior to Jefferies. It's a shame because the kid could hit, retiring with a .289 career average with only 348 strikeouts in over 6000 plate appearances. Like Amos Otis and others, he blossomed after leaving the Mets.

No argument here about Kent.

Jeffries came up to a different team than Straw came up to. Those Mets that Jeffries came up to would have resented Will Rodgers and not liked him. Instead of mentoring Jeffries they isolated and ridiculed him. Remember Randy Myers posting a sign in the dugout by the lineup that said “Are we trying” referring to Jeffries being in the lineup. Sure Jeffries had his quirks but they could have helped him as teammates instead of hindering him.

I wouldn’t use the word blossomed in Jeffries case. He was supposed to be a generational talent, the proverbial “5-tool” player before it became an overused term (especially for Mets prospects) and he never remotely became that guy. He was definitely a serviceable player throughout his career, an above average hitter in terms of average, but the fact he was oft-traveled through his career is also an indication he wasn’t exactly universally liked by his teammates (or coaches).

Edit:looking at the back of his card, I’m inclined to think he was getting “help” his 2 years in St. Louis because his stats are way beyond anything else those two seasons.

Mets offense comes up ultra small last two days. Marte has become a double play specialist. Alonso 1-12, 0-5 RISP for the series.
Could not ask for more from Tong and Sproat, on the road against a desperate contender in a playoff race, 2nd and 1st ML starts.
Just an absolute Jekyll and Hyde team.
I stay away from predictions but it sure smells like the Mets will find a way to go home prior to the postseason.
We shall see……….

Magic number at 16
Reds, Giants -4 - both have 19 games left
Cards, Dbacks -4.5 - both have 18 games left

San Francisco Baseball Giants have 6 against AZ, 3 against StL at Candlestick
Dbacks also finish the season with 3 in SD
Cincy has 4 against the Padres and 3 against the Cards, all on the road

Weird that the Mets finished with the Cards before Cinco De Mayo (makes me feel there’s something fundamentally wrong with the schedule).

Mets have:
4 @ Philly
3 vs Texas, SD, Gnats
3 @ Cubs and Marlins

At this juncture, my best hope is that we slip into the playoffs, largely undeserved as a talented, but flawed team, and catch fire in the playoffs. This trio of young arms could be the catalysts to stabilize a shaky pitching staff - at least that's the dream.

With all the teams chasing them the playoffs are no guarantee.

There is just something missing in the character of this team. They win game one of this series and then just blah. They had two rookies who gave them credible starts.

Teams with good leadership put foot to ass and finish the job. I get it it’s baseball and anything can happen. However, we’ve seen this for too long this season. I feel like the team is just floating. Way too much talent with zero leadership or killer instinct. Very frustrating, underperforming team.

Would have thought Lindor would take on the Leadership role no?
Of all team sports, baseball is the most individualistic. Only one guy is at bat with no help, one guy fields the ball, etc. Good and bad though, this team feeds off each other, acoring 19 runs or getting shut out, coming back or blowing leads. Leadership does matter. Carter thought he was the leader, but Hernandez was the guy everyone followed.

Perhaps appropriately today, give credit to a Davey Johnson, who lets the team have swagger, trusted veterans to demand best efforts from younger guys, and orchestrated platoons and let guys like Backman and Knight overperform.

RIP Davey, tpu may or may not have been a HOF manager but no question you were a damned fine one.

Whatevs...I had like 50 or more Jeffries rookie cards. They not even worth the stick of gum that came with those packs
