Alabama game 11/8

Hey guys. I am a die hard Alabama fan/season ticket holder, but come in peace. I am planning on making the trip to NYC for the game. I live in Birmingham and this will only be my second time in NY. Just wanted to see if anybody has any recommendations on places to stay? Probably won’t stay in the city because of cost but how do yall feel about new jersey and taking the subway or path train into town? Also any thoughts on how much tickets might cost to a game like this one? Any thoughts and tips would be greatly appreciated. Look forward to seeing Madison Square Garden and seeing the best basketball coach of all time in person.

Best recommendation I can make is to fly in to JFK, stay at the TWA Hotel (it's pricey but convenient). Short walk to the JFK Airtrain which connects with the LIRR in Jamaica. Take the LIRR to Penn station and MSG is upstairs.

Mass transit into the city is fine. If you are looking at certain cities in Jersey there are guys here who live in Jersey who can give you more specific mass transit advice.

No clue what game prices will be the school is literally going through reseating with season ticket holders now then after that’s done the people buying msg only season tix begins in September

If you are looking to sightsee after the game Times Square is very walkable you basically just walk north up 7th Ave from MSG to Times Square

If you’re really dedicated to the NJ idea, Jersey city is your best bet since the PATH goes directly to 33rd Street. It’s about 25 minutes. It’ll be a day game so you should be fine getting in and out.

I am not very familiar with hotel prices, but I wouldn’t discount staying in queens or Brooklyn. It may be more expensive but you can still get a city experience while not being in Manhattan.

I’d be shocked if tickets in lower bowl are less than $150 but I could be off.

You can try to stay in Queens or Brooklyn, even long island near a train station and take the long island rail road in.

Agree. I would not advise staying in NJ. Newark airport is a disaster these days. If you can fly into LaGuardia it’s a really nice airport and get a hotel room in Flushing or Bayside you can take the LIRR directly into Penn Station/MSG and it’s an easy Uber ride from your hotel to LaGuardia.
My two cents.

If you want to save money you could look for a hotel near Secaucus Junction in NJ. You can get a cheap train there directly from Newark Airport and also take the train right into Penn Station or get a bus from dozens of spots nearby to the Port Authority.

Both legs of the train are about 15 minutes.

I believe the only direct flights from Alabama to NYC region go from Birmingham to LaGuardia (LGA). To me it makes no sense to then take an expensive round trip Uber or long public transportation ride from LGA in Queens to and from New Jersey where you’d also need to commute to and from MSG. I recommend staying in queens in the Astoria / Long Island City (LIC) area which is close to LGA and where there are plenty of cheap hotels and an easy subway ride to and from MSG. A quick search shows the Doubletree by Hilton in LIC for $119 per night and that’s a 29 min $2.75 direct subway ride to MSG. There are cheaper hotels too but things start to get shady real quick at lower price points.

First - I would book your flight soon. My guess is LGA would give you your best flight options. A direct flight will be expensive but if you plan ahead there a lot of one stop flights on American and Delta. If you are going to stay in Flushing I would recommend one of the higher rated hotels. Another option would be downtown Manhattan. It’s a little dead on the weekends but prices are lower by Manhattan standards. If you are ok with the subway, it’s a quick ride to MSG.

I just saw the post about Astoria and Long Island City. That makes sense also but I would again read the reviews. Also realized that Downtown Manhattan would be a long trip or very expensive by Uber.

The Marriott and Hilton Garden Inn in Long Island City are both nice. The restaurant Serafina is right there AND the subway is right there as well. I believe straight to Penn Station and MSG. Cheers!!!

times square Mike?! You're better than that 😂

Newark Airport's gotten better, fly in there, stay at the Marriott Courtyard right on the Hudson River in the waterfront (nice--very safe) area in Jersey City, and it's only about 6 stops on the PATH train to the Garden. PATH is much nicer than the NYC subway too.

The Marriott isn't too expensive and it's very nice, next to a beautiful pier that goes out into the Hudson River with views of midtown AND downtown Manhattan, to die for.

Once you get off the PATH at Sixth Ave. and 33rd Street, have dinner at Keens Steakhouse at 36th and Sixth and you are a five minute walk to MSG.

A very excellent Italian restaurant near the Garden and much less expensive is Birrichinno's at 29th St. and Eight Ave.

Bing, bang, Boom.

Totally agree. There are flights direct from Birmingham to Newark, and Newark has been fine for a few months now. The issues they had lasted about a week or so. I fly in and out if there all the time. Going to LGA is fine too, but no reason to avoid NJ. Either would work.

Jersey Guy here. If I was doing what you are doing and staying in the city was not an option, I’d like to stay in a place that I could walk to transit that brings me to MSG and I don’t want to have to change trains or do anything complicated. I’ve attached a link to the Path map

If you were to stay in NJ… Hoboken, Newport (Jersey City), Groove Street (JC), and Journal Square (Journal Square) will be straight shots to 33rd Street in NYC which is a block from MSG.

In order of expense Hoboken will be the most expensive, there’s a W Hotel right next to the PATH and plenty of bars and restaurants for your enjoyment.

Newport and Grove are probably the next most expensive places. Newport has a Marriot Courtyard right next to the Path and a Westin a short walk away. The bars and restaurants in this area are few unless you interested in a big old mall.

Grove has a Hilton and Residence Inn right near the path and it’s got a good selection of things to do nearby. There is a restaurant Razza that has the best pizza outside of Italy and I challenge any NYer to say otherwise.

Journal Square would be cheapest. I think the nearest brand name hotel is a Ramada. It’s not overly active at night. And I would consider it the least safe of all the options although it not unsafe enough that I’d would avoid the area.

There are also places you can take NJ Transit in from. Secaucus junction has trains has extremely frequent trains to Penn Station but hotels aren’t walkable and Secaucus doesn’t offer much in the way of a town.

Another option would be a Newark (around Newark Penn station instead of Newark broad as more trains go through Newark Penn and you can do a Path exchange if you need too) but I don’t think the savings would be worth the extra distance.

Well with all due respect to our Garden State posters, I can only assume you were not born and raised east of the Hudson with that kind of attitude. ;)
Lmao. Born in Brooklyn, but raised mostly in NJ. I’m an hour outside the city, so have lived in some of the better parts of the state.
