UConn fans watch a lot of us, and we watch plenty of them too. You could feel their jealousy last year. It definitely got under their skin. Over 35 years, they’ve built a powerhouse, no doubt. But for all the banners and success, they’re still not mentioned in the same breath as Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, UNC, or UCLA.

Then we come back last year and suddenly a city that had been starving for a winner wakes up. UConn wants that New York City spotlight badly. But deep down, their fans and alumni know: they’re still a plucky state school surrounded by farmland. Built on the backs of women’s basketball and funded by PBS tote bags sold during Bee Gees concert re-runs to old Jewish couples.

We’re a small Catholic school, but we have NYC. UConn can throw money at their Stamford campus all they want—it’s still not New York. And yeah, Connecticut’s pizza is legit but they’ve got, what, seven great spots built off Pepe’s cousins? We’ve got over a hundred, and we don’t need to make a whole campaign out of it.

If we win a national title, we’ll have a parade down the Canyon of Heroes. When UConn wins? They get five floats in a neighborhood in Hartford that smells like dog shit.

Here’s to hopefully fun watch party in New Haven. Should be a good one maybe Catwalk after a Johnnie’s victory!
