Frank Layden

I was listening to a replay of NBA Radio this morning on the Termine and Johnson Show, wherein they played an interview with the Late Great HOFer Frank Layden.
Mr. Layden spoke fondly of being a St. John’s assistant coach, and eventually the NBA Coach of Billy Paultz who he met at our school.
I knew he had a fulfilling life, but I never knew he was a Johnnie.
The interview was a lot of fun and he was tremendously funny. RIP Coach Layden. Who knew?

He was also named as head of the search committee to replace Coach Carnesecca upon his retirement. The search went nowhere and Mahoney was hired.

Lou and Layden went head to head 6 times during SJU v Niagara matchups. The Redmen were 5-1 in those games. The one loss is when Calvin Murphy outdueled Billy Paultz.

When they gave him the assignment they also gave him a huge rubber stamp.

Billy Paultz last season in the pro's was 1984-1985 under Frank Layden in Utah he backed up Mark Eaton.
