NBA Draft 2025

Is that why 18 teans invited RJ to work out pre-draft, because they knew they weren't going to draft him? So you think he flew all over the country in order to get himself a 2 way and forego at least $2 million in NIL this coming season?

An NBA 2 way deal is worth $578k, roughly 1/4 of what he would have earned next year, with far less visibility and exposure.

So even if that wasn't all true, who made you the king of emotions to state that this should not be disappointing for fans who rooted for RJ to get drafted, and for RJ and his family, who gambled on guaranteed NBA 1st round money and was completely shut out of the draft. If you think loyal Johnny fans were not following each pick, hoping to hear his name, or the name of one of our kids NBA scouts thought highly of, you are probably not much of a true fan or supporter yourself. There is a big difference between expecting one of our kids to get drafted and being disappointed that they weren't.

Each year we graduate around 3000 students. All are hoping to land great jobs when they hit the market. Many won't, some with marginal academic records, communication skills that need work, or lacking specific skills. Do they or their friends or family not have a right to be dusappointed, or does someone like you think because the result is predictable they don't have a right to be disappointed.

On the topic of nba being able to cover foreign players the way they can college players, I'm certain you are unaware that the nba requires each team to have a minimum of just two scouts. Most teams have 12 or less, and considering basketball is played extensively on 4 continents do you really think scouts are covering Australia, Europe, Asia, South America in person equally? Farcical some would say, but I would leave you to tout yourself in your own mind by diminishing other opinions.

At least a nasty former poster's opinions were generally well researched, and written like the attorney he is, even if he was an ascerbic ass. But that's just my opinion and others are free to disagree.

Great Post , Beast .

All the scouts got to watch the international guys go up against the top American players leading up to the draft. That's far more important than watching them in their respective leagues IMO.

Or if we had RJ for the last 454.
I'm wondering how many times a coach benched his best player in crunch time at the end of a close game.

I csn only think of players who benced themselves:

Pippen, refused to take the court when a last possession play was drawn up for Tony Kukoc.

Wilt Chamberlain, claiming injury, benched himself for the close of a nba championship game.

Hindsight is 20/20 so I'm not even close to saying it was the wrong move.

Relative to the draft, the Arkansas game certainly didn’t help his chances and likely hurt. Had the draft been held right after the BET, he may have heard his name called.

You have to pick one: Either NBA teams do their due diligence (18 workouts to evaluate a player) or they're just guessing (who is this guy from Europe anyway? Eh, let's draft him and see what happens!). I'm going go to with "30 multi-billion dollar corporations who have scouted and signed many European players some of whom are now All-Stars know what they're doing." And have you stopped to consider the fact that after 18 workouts not one NBA team thought RJ was worth spending even a second round pick on, which might be an indicator of a significant hole or holes in his basketball skillset (at least at this juncture)?

As for the "disappointment" factor, it's all relative to rational expectations. I don't see you expressing the same "disappointment" about Kadary (correct spelling, btw) or Aaron. Is that because you had had expectations for RJ but not for them? If so that's ironic because from an NBA standpoint they all have about a roughly similar shot of getting there.

RJ had an absolute right to roll the dice on a low-percentage outcome - and I happen to think he did the right thing. He was never going to be drafted any higher than the low end of the second round, but now he will get full time professional coaching and have an opporutnity to play his way into the leage. He could have made more money next year by staying in college, but there is no guarantee that his stock would have been any higher and in fact it might have gone down.

By the way if folks actually think that getting benched at the end of the Arkansas game impacted his draft stock then I don't know what to tell you - that isn't how the draft evaluation process works. Do you think Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper got downgraded because their team stunk? That Maluach got downgraded because all 7'2" of him grabbed ZERO rebounds against Houston (and he got benched with 5 minutes left, returning with a minute and a half left to give a foul)?.

Your point about other St John's grads is a good one. I am sure there is a brilliant kid at SJU Law who also has a C average. I guess he and his family may be "disappointed" when he doesn't land a job at Paul Weiss, but if so that would be a product of irrational expectations. I will be disappointed if the lottery ticket I bought this morning doesn't win, too. Still, that kid may get a job someplace else, learn how to match his IQ with work production, and turn out to be very successful.

Every year there are first rounders who wash out and second rounders who play their way in. Hopefully RJ will be one of the latter.

As for the degree to which my posts about basketball are "informed," let me know when you post something that is actually about basketball instead of a Beast Folksy Tale about people and places and memories. I really enjoy the knowledgeable basketball posters here and appreciate their perspective on the game - I learn something every day, especially from some of the younger stat-savvy folks.
