Memory Lane

HBD to the Truth. Walter was automatic in the post. No exaggeration.

I hope these guys , Shawnelle , Zendon and The Truth know how well they are regarded by the Alums and Fan base.

And , it’s great that they all got behind the Team this year .

Walter’s tribute to Lou when he passed was a heart felt eulogy that touched many of us . I think it was posted previously on here .

Nelle, class act all the way, another great example of St. John's University producing men of character. We all hear about athletes being entitled or selfish, St. John's men like Nelle, Ty, David Cain and innumerable others are the opposite. Makes this St. John's fan proud.

I love seeing our brothers from earlier eras coming to our games and rooting us on, it seemed to happen so much more these past two years.

But I recall standing in line at the Will Call window at the Garden 7-8 years ago and saw Ty, and Charles Mineland and Lamont Middleton and Sean Muto, and some others, it was fun chatting them up. Brought back good memories.

Any truth that Charles tried to get down to the Court Side to get at Donnie Marshall ?
They had a clastic dust up back in the day .

1990 was probably the deepest NYC class ever.

We ended up with Shawnelle and Lee Green, but there were FOUR McD All Americans and one all-time NYC great.

Jamal Mashburn: Hayes, Kentucky
Brian Reese: Tolentine, UNC
Adrian Autry: Tolentine, Cuse
Derrick Phelps: CTK, UNC
Khalid Reeves: CTK, Arizona
Rob Phelps: Nazareth, Providence
Rich Ashmeade: Holy Cross, UConn/Rutgers
Norman Marbury: Lincoln, Tennessee/St. Francis

The book that came out a few years ago about the Laetner shot against Kentucky does a real deep dive into Coach K, Pitino, and their building of those two respective teams while at Duke and KY.

On Mashburn, the book talks about his Mom basically telling him he could go to any school in the country. He tells her “Well I want to stay local and go to St John’s”. She says “you can go anywhere but St John’s - not because I dislike the school or coaches or anything like that - but I want you far enough away from the neighborhood”. The people around him began pushing KY because “they have the guy who used to coach the Knicks”. And so Mash ends up going to KY and seems to be the kid Pitino references as the single biggest recruit he ever landed because of the impact he had on the KY rebuild and Pitino’s career generally.

I remember that dust up leading to a lot of acrimony in the stands that day as well. That was a crazy scene that game.

Even with that dust up, the St. John’s player he really “dislikes” to this day is not Minlend.

That player also was a PF and also undersized for the position and is Lamont Middleton.

Great. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
