Regardless of what anybody on this Board thinks , RJ Luis is one of only 3 St John’s players to be POY . RJ was also BET MVP, after scoring 27 points in the 2nd half of the Final against Creighton .
It’s in the Record Books of the School and the Big East League . It will remain there for eternity .

A Majority of BE Coaches voted RJ that honor and deservedly so . They didn’t vote Zuby or Kadary for POY but , honored their Play on All BE teams . RJ was the guy , don’t doubt it .
Yes ,they know more about BB than most fans , probably all .

Yes , Ponds hasn’t been given enough credit for being our best Player and 1 of the best Players in the BE , during his 3 years here . Don’t snipe at him or RJ from the uncomfortable seats .

Diminishing RJ and Ponds careers here , in any way , isn’t accurate nor , believable .
But , those who have that opinion , so be it .

See, the dots do connect. Scored 27 against a Creighton team that lacks athleticism. Did nothing against an Arkansas team that had outstanding athleticism. Falling out of the NBA draft because when you can't win based on athleticism (which is hard to do in the NBA given the level of competition) you need other tools in your toolkit. Which brings us back on topic!

Because it’s easy to put up 27 points in a half in a college game. Everybody does it all the time. Takes virtually no skill at all.

Feel badly for RJ, who by all accounts is a great kid. Had a stellar breakout season, on top of the world. Then boom- benched during the Tourney, followed up by a bad NBA combine. I hope he goes to a team in the SEC or Big 12, makes a huge mark in his senior season, and works his way up to the 1st round/early 2nd round draft next year.

Also you misread his stat line (yes now I had to go look it up) - it was 6.5 PPG and 4 APG. It was POINT 7 steals per game. But he did shoot .383 from three.

I hate that guy. Criminal that he played in the league for 16 - SIXTEEN - years with 8 - EIGHT - different teams (counting Portland once even though he had three stints with them) and Hatten never got a sniff. So annoying.

On the flip side I think some fans get way too easily offended about players being critiqued. RJ won all kinds of accolades for us. He was a part of a team that won 30+ games. That is awesome. i have certainly never seen anything like last season in my time as a fan. But as a fan of basketball does this mean there is not a space to be able to talk about some of his positives and negatives on the basketball court? I mean I think we can all agree no player is perfect right

Well frankly, RJ isn't projected to get drafted. As fans there has to be room to be able to unpack why that is, and perhaps talk about what may be holding him back from an evaluation standpoint. But I feel like if anyone gets two words out about what he may lack in his game, you are about five seconds away from getting hit with "THERE HAVE BEEN THREE BIG EAST PLAYERS OF THE YEAR IN ST JOHNS HISTORY AND RJ LUIS IS ONE OF THEM, SHOW SOME GODDAMN RESPECT"

Like, alright, I get it. I get where that comes from. We are all emotionally attached to these guys that performed at a high level for us and won us a bunch of games. But that doesn't make them infallible.

And in terms of how RJ will be remembered. he will be remembered fondly. There is no denying that. But people throw this Big East POY award around like it makes him above criticism. The award is usually given to a player on the best team in the conference, which was us. RJ averaged the most points for us. He had the highest usage on the team. He got the award. I have no issue with it. But I also think he was our third best player. Just my opinion. (And there's no shame in being the third best player on a 31-5 team).

No player is perfect is a given. Downplaying his importance to last years success is another story.
 
Luis played the third most minutes on the team. His ability to hit clutch shots and carry the team to a handful of key wins is hard to forget, and most importantly recognized by the POY voters. A very important point that people overlook is that he ended the season third on the team in total assists and was arguably our best rebounder on the team full of rebounders.
