Haggerty Awards for Ejofor, Richmond & Luis

Outside o all the history of Haggerty & Metro Basketball Writers Assoc., does anyone who if this is funded by participating universities or private?

Just trying to understand better what MBWA actually does given this is different time than decades ago where NYC area basketball was broader in terms of interest

Really nice to see RJ with Zuby accepting an award as a Johnny. Maybe his final appearrance as a Johnny, but happy to hear he is in the area, and likelynf8nishing his semester here.

It would take an act of God, or at least St. Mike, but imagine how crazy our roster would be if RJ returned?

Read where he is training back in Florida but flew up to accept the award. Said he was concentrating on the draft.

It's easy to forget that in terms of income and financial wherewithal, these aren't typical college students with financial limitations affecting their mobility. Plus these kids are often taking online courses, giving them limited interactions if any with other students.

Reminder of how distorted the idea of student athlete has become.

Nice Comments from Zuby about RJ at the Haggerty Awards dinner last night .

NY Post article did a nice job in reporting on Zuby ‘s comments .,

Zuby is a great teammate and why he was the Captain . Probably will be next year as well , with Ayo .

As for RJ , I just don’t get the why that the NBA Scouts don’t give him more credit

He’s way better than a Karraban for example , who still gets 2 nd team draft nods , despite stinking for the whole year

And , was their any better player in the BE last year than RJ.
He’s a good shooter , very good defender and unrelenting rebounder under the basket . He’s quick and probably quicker than a lot of guys in the NBA now .

Sure , he can improve on 3 point shooting but , who can’t improve ?

He’s a streaky guy , capable of going from 2 points to 29 points in a 20 minute half . Like he did against Creighton .

Age? There were a lot of guys older than RJ last year who were picked in the 1st round .

I guess I’m just mystified about the lack of respect he gets from these Scouts .

Because he dribbles with his head down. And what he was not doing (not hustling back on defense and not running CRPs play) against Arkansas. Plus his age and injury history.

I still think he’s a second round pick because he’s a great person and teammate and can take people off the dribble and is strong going to the basket.
He will need to show out at the Combine. I’m betting that he will.

As I said in another thread, one recent mock draft had the Knicks using their late second round pick to take Eric Dixon from Nova (he's older than RJ) - maybe the Knicks take RJ if he' still there which would be great.

And I’d love the Nets to take a second round flyer on Kadary. Let him run the point with the LI Nets.

I could have sworn we locked the RJ thread. But hey, we can make this the new RJ thread!

My prediction is that by November 15 it will be "RJ who?" around here.

Being ranked in the 2025-26 Top 10 may not be a precursor of the season, but it's certainly indicative of the high regard with which blue chip players hold RP, otherwise they wouldn't be committing to SJ. That, and our HOF coach's track record of success are more than enough for me to refrain from playing armchair coach and questioning his moves. I'm also tired of the folks who continue to bash RP for benching Luis. The kid gave us a great season and I loved him as a player for the most part, ball hogging and judgement issues notwithstanding. But in the most important game of his career, RJ choked. Flat out choked. As for next season's PG, let's not forget Daniss played for a MM before transferring to SJ. RP may yet come up with a solid PG from the MM ranks. As excited as I became over the course of this past season, it quickly disintegrated into one of the most disappointing seasons in years for me. I'm cautiously optimistic for the upcoming season, and am as glad as ever RP will be on the sidelines for us.

A little harsh on our BE POY, All American , Haggerty Award winner, Academic All American , BET MVP.

Choked ?

Luis is a streaky player . Did you see the Creighton game ?
2 points at the half , 27 in the 2nd half

There were 5 minutes left in the Arkansas game , when he was benched . Who’s to say , RJ couldn’t have exploded for 10 points in the next 90 Seconds ?

It was a 2 point game when our lineup was Zuby , Scott (1-10 shooting ) , Smith , Lefty and Prey were going to win that game ?

Remember too, KR and Wilcher had already fouled out .

Where were the points going to come from ?

The Trophies in CA will show for eternity Mullin , Berry and RJ Luis as BE POY !

You shouldn’t be locking threads about any of our Players , past or present .

The Luis name appears again resulting from his Haggerty Award this week and why it’s resurfaced.

Hardly admirable to ignore that Award Ceremony since Zuby was honored as well .

QUEENS, N.Y. (April 25, 2025) –
The St. John’s men’s and women’s basketball programs received several honors at the 92 Annual Haggerty All-Met Dinner hosted by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers’ Association (MBWA) on Thursday in Tarrytown, N.Y.

St. John’s men’s basketball standouts Zuby Ejiofor, RJ Luis Jr., Kadary Richmond along with women’s basketball star Lashae Dwyer earned All-Met recognition. Red Storm Head Coach Rick Pitino was also honored with the MBWA Coach of the Year award, newly named “The Looie” in honor of fellow Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca. Pitino became the first St. John’s head coach to win the MBWA Coach of the Year award since 1999.

Luis, the program’s first consensus All-American in the 21st century, was presented with the final award of the night, the Lt. Frank J Haggerty Award which is given to the region’s top player among the 21 Division I metropolitan area schools.

“This is a great honor, being from Miami and being embraced by the whole metropolitan area is something I wouldn’t trade for the world,” Luis said during his acceptance speech. “This season was special as we were able to win a BIG EAST Tournament and Regular Season title for the first time in 40 years.”

Luis, Ejiofor and Richmond were recognized as All-Met First Team selections, marking just the sixth time in the awards history three players from the same school were tabbed to the top team.

Dwyer, the 2024-25 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, was named an All-Met Second Team selection. The St. John’s women’s basketball program has had a player earn MBWA honors for the last 20 years consecutively.

BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman was also honored on Thursday receiving the MBWA’s Distinguished Service Award for her accomplished career in the sports industry and contributions to basketball at every level. Notably, Ackerman was recognized for dedicated service overseeing the rebirth of the BIG EAST Conference. Jay Wright, a fellow Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and two-time National Champion at Villanova, introduced Ackerman to a room full of honorees and special guests.

Additionally, the Met Basketball Writers’ Association saluted John Paquette, the BIG EAST’s Senior Commissioner for Sports Media Relations, for his 35 years of service to the conference. Paquette was previously honored by the MBWA with the Distinguished Service Award in 2013 and the Mike Cohen “Good Guy” Award in 1989.

Thread has been renamed so feel free to discuss the Haggerty Award or any of the awardees.

If you want to discuss Dixon, Karaban, Chris Mullin, Lew Alcindor, or Joe Lapchick then you are definitively off topic. I would suggest Dixon and Karaban for the Around the Big East thread and the others for the Memory Lane thread.

TGIF.

Almost all of the above post are off topic and that my fine-feathered friends is why threads get locked, or posts simply get deleted.

There are any number posters who ignore the rules and waste everyone's time by repeatedly posting off topic many times in a thread. I'm not saying they are not fans, they most certainly are. I'm saying they are inconsiderate by derailing topics that other posters are interested in but give up trying to find anything related to the topic name.

Several relocated to try to accomplish readability - the complaints about "screw readability" have been relocated to the Spring Cleaning thread.

And now - back to Haggerty, Zuby, Kadary, RJ and the rest of the topic.

Not one moderator is asking anyone to ignore the accomplishments of any current or former SJU player.

Everyone needs to take a step back from the ledge. Enjoy the numerous memories RJ gave us, just do not get triggered and make every mention of RJ into an excuse to start another “why oh why is RJ no longer here.”
