RJ Luis earned 1st Team College Sports Communication (CSC) Academic All America Honors. Zuby Ejiofor earned 2nd Team Honors. I feel this is relevant since we often tend to categorize athletes, as just athletes. The amount of condescending posts on message boards and internet articles has always bothered me, since it is a generalization. However, due to the advent of NIL it has really taken off. Posts and articles stating that they are now getting paid and should be considered professionals are delusional. Yes, athletes are finally receiving their just due for participating in intercollegiate sports and it definitely was too long in coming. However, they are still required to attend class and maintain a satisfactory GPA. The determination that it takes to do this is commendable.
What these two young men accomplished this year deserves recognition. D1 college football and basketball is a 12 month a year commitment. Those who casually say student athlete is a thing of the past need to get off their high horse and look at the situation objectively and without prejudice. Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter had a 3.79 GPA at Colorado. Much respect for what this young man has accomplished as a student athlete. Did he have a Great NIL Package? Yes. Did he deserve it? Definitely.
What I am trying to say is that we should be enjoying college sports and respect the athletes who play them. Some, not all are quick to judge student athletes without any idea at all of what it takes to play D1 collegiate sports in the 21st century.
