Unless RJ actually makes an NBA team this move is a mistake by him. He should have just sucked it up and dealt with CRP another season. This move doesn’t help him build a solid reputation. But in any event I thank RJ for coming here and giving us 2 great seasons. I’m not going to be devastated on losing an average shooter at best.
Is it a mistake if he makes more money from it?

Also, if you wanna talk about “reputation”, I’ll be honest, no one is gonna care about this long term. How many kids are in the portal right now? Like 1500? I could even be low balling. RJ is just another in the long long long list of athletes in the transfer portal. Reputation has nothing to do with it. This is just the way it is now.

Kadary Richmond bailed on his team, to an in conference rival. His reputation was absolutely fine

Any further repetitive comments on CRP pulling RJ out for the last five minutes of the ARK game will be deleted.

I'm guessing Matt and Rick had a number for RJ. Let's call it 1.5M. "RJ, we want you back, but this is our number. If you choose to try the NBA route you should also hit the portal because we can't afford to wait for you (or won't hit the number you desire)." It sucks, but no hard feelings either way. This is how the game today works. In this way, I believe it was indeed mutual and IMHO prob had little or nothing to do with his final game. I love RJ and wish him only the best. Matt and Rick have work to do and can't wait around.

I think Coach Pitino played the RJ situation brilliantly. He rode RJ’s banner year for all he could get out of it. For this year, RJ was THE man. But college basketball is not static. Every year is a new dynamic, and with RJ’s financial demands, the growing talent on the roster and the need to fill holes that this team clearly has, especially given the departure of Kadary and others, RJ was never coming back next year. Pitino knew this way before we did. Trust the HoF coach.

I loved RJ and will root for him wherever he goes, as long as it is not UConn. I thank him for an amazing season and we will miss him but I fully expect Pitino and company to field just as good if not better squad next year! The season we had the sold out MSG we will no longer have any issues getting big time kids to want to come here.

Well not that's it's officially official, I want to thank RJ for giving us a memorable season for the ages...MVP season after shins put career in doubt. You helped put St Johns back on the map. Remind the world NYC and the Garden is the Mecca of basketball. No place like it when you're winning and you helped us do just that... Hopefully NBA preferably the Knicks is your future.. If not anywhere but UConn or Duke I will root for you....Good luck RJ

It's a disappointing outcome, but I understand it. Luis should be about maximizing his worth, and St. John's needs to make sure that they are in a position to exhaust all options toward putting together the best roster that they possibly can. Luis was one of my favorite players to watch, his mid range game was lethal, he was an underrated rebounder, and was deceptively long defensively. By all accounts, he is a really good kid. I am rooting for his success, no matter where this may be. Nothing involved with this should result in anyone minimizing his contributions to St. John's, nor throwing shade at him for maximizing his earning capability.

As for the Arkansas game, he had a far away look in his eyes for the entirety of the game, and never seemed to be in the flow of the game. It happens to everyone at some point. I had no problem with Pitino pulling him, as he is armed with far more information than any of us are in terms of what was going on on the floor, what was said to Luis, what was said in return, etc. If anyone thinks that Pitino tanked a game for a teaching moment in the NCAA Tournament, I would recommend taking a drug test. Pitino wanted to win that game more than any of us did - he didn't think that the way that Luis was performing was going to give him the best chance of doing that. I trust in the coach. Hell, if Pat Riley did this back in 1994 with John Starks, the NBA title drought for the Knicks may be 31 years instead of 52.

I wish R.J. Luis nothing but the best, and I hope he realizes all of the success that he is capable of and deserving of. He was a terrific representative of the university, and is a fine young man. Thank you for an amazing season that we will not forget. If there is a path back to St. John's, I hope he finds it, but I am not counting on it.

Yeah but RJ situation IMO is different. First the money will eventually come for a talented kid like RJ (worst case he can make a ton overseas after he graduates) and should not be the main motivator, he can defer money for a year. Yes there are 1,000 kids entering the portal but RJ is a nationally recognized player under a HOF coach who had a nationally televised game for all to see how it went down. If CRP sat him down and said you need to leave then I do not blame him as he has no other choice to make (I hope CRP did not actually do this). But if he is making this decision b/c he has his feelings hurt then it shows he can't take the heat and to me is a blow to his rep on the pro level that also hurts his NBA chances. There are many sharks out there getting into his head and it takes quite the discipline and maturity to make the right decision. This is a unreasonable gamble move by RJ.

I am all for the portal b/c we are transfer central when it comes to players. Yes, I am upset RJ is leaving but lets be real we are not losing a Artest or Mullin like player (for the record I was 2 young to have seen Mullin play at SJU so 2 me Artest is the King). The roster next year will be fine with or without him.

Remember do not substitute your experience as a fan as being qualified to tell a 21-22 year old kid what is best for him.

If he gets hurt will you be there to support him? If a family member falls ill will you be there with medical insurance?

RJ should do what's best for him. Love the kid and hope he kills it.

But Rick and staff were not caught off guard and in fact it really was mutual. The roster will be big time when it is finished.

FWIW, RJ's HS coach at Miami Columbus, Andrew Moran, is expected to become an assistant coach at the University of Miami
Moran would be joining the staff of the new head coach, Jai Lucas
For those of you who have followed college basketball for a long time, Jai is John Lucas' son
John Lucas helped us. Now hurts us
