Congratulations to Terrence Mullin who was the Grand Marshall at today’s Rockaway Queens St Patrick’s Day Parade. Terrence is very involved in the Belle Harbour Rockaway community for more than 25 years. He has done a lot of work for the St Francis De Salles parish CYO program and is a pillar in the community.

Terrence has been a fixture at home games this year, so I'm sure part of him wanted to be at MSG yesterday.
It's a nice honor for him to be named Grand Marshall at the Rockaway Parade. Along with Broad Channel, the Rockaways continue to have a throwback feel to them with a large Irish community from Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor, Riis Park to Breezy Point, including many NYPD and NYFD. Parishes like St. Francis de Sales and St. Camillus are still centers of family life. Cool slice of NYC life and memories of a bygone era where everyone in Queens escaped the summer heat by escaping to Rockaway beaches. For us Jones Beach was a faraway destination and the Hamptons another country.

After I graduated, a friend who had been on the SJU swim team, (yes we had a swim team for all you young ones, men and women, complete with a natatorium in AH) graduated to lifeguarding at Rockaway after doing that at Astoria Park. We rented bungalows there pretty cheaply. Lifeguards knew how to organize pretty good parties, especially at Ft. Tilden in between the abandoned WW2 bunkers on the property. A rite of passage for some was diving off the Marine Parkway Bridge, now know as the Gild Hodges bridge. Didn't say they were smart.
And of course, the basketball courts at 108th Street drew some pretty good players. My aunt used to go there to watch some Knick players, including our own McGuire brothers. Yes, I am that old to have had an aunt who saw them in person.
My parents met each other at the Irish Circle. The Rockaways will always have a special place in my heart and that of my family’s.
And I went to school with Terrence. He is friends of my family and obviously his is a big part of our community. He represents our school and community so well and doesn’t seek any acknowledgment of it. Terrence is…

Grew up in Belle Harbor. Friends told me Rockaways had 93 funerals between B. 98th and Breezy after 9/11.
Still have a place in Breezy Point-nothing like the Irish Riviera for those of us who couldn't afford the Hamptons. Funny thing is that our beach is getting wider each year thanks to the tides and the Hamptons sand so now we do have a beach from the Hamptons. Missed the parade this year as I was at a more important event in a place called MSG.
My mom lives right next door to where it used to be.
Went to elementary school with the guy whose parents owned Playland.
Just hitch a ride man.
