RJ's defense on the last play was really bad. Poplar drives and RJ is right there to close him off and lets him go. Then on the kick and swing RJ is in the wrong spot, 10 feet off Perkins, late to close. For as good as he's been defensively and overall this year, this was just a really poor and costly mental lapse. Unfortunate.

RJ was bad defensively last night period. He started the game covering Poplar. It wasn’t a coincidence he sat a lot in first half.

He's certainly one of the greatest of all time...but that doesn't mean he's infallible. The last play was a mistake. Pitino pointed out Wilcher made the previous shot...but, other than practice, when has he hit two in a row.
Another thing...we have virtually no scoring from the bench. It's the kiss of death with Smith a non-factor the rest of the way.

Sorry to be such a bummer.

Sorry, but we have no scoring off our bench. We dont have the luxury to bring a guy off our bench who cannot score the basketball.

We are playing 4 on 5 on offense when Prey is in the game. Hes a liability and has no business being out there.

But we have nobody else so hes is forced to play.
Liability on offense is not a same as ‘total liability.’

I'd gave him that shot all day, 15% at best. Longest 3 I've seen made all year.
With 2 seconds on the shot clock you would rather just let him shoot than rush him and make him put it on the floor or create an infinitely more difficult shot? Sounds like a sound approach…….you see as it turned out it wasn’t 15% at all it was 100%. Playing intelligently with maximum effort under the prevailing circumstances is always better than doing nothing.

Dead Rabbit in Boiling Pot at Section9's house don't worry it's just a warning from ESPKEN. He's too good of a guy to actually do anything worse than kill a rabbit and boil it on your stove and shave the word Neptune on it's dead dangling body :)
He's welcome to come, we have a few rabbits in our yard, but only if you join us and bring the pisco sours. :)

A question I have about Prey is why is he settling for three pointers? He’s made some nice drives to the basket and even some good midrange shots. Lately it’s only been threes.

While Pitino’s defensive coaching style has been legendary, the one area of his coaching style I don’t agree with is his encouraging everyone to take threes. Some kids just can’t make them and some kids can’t make them often enough. And while many will argue a missed three yields a long rebound, when you think about it a missed shot of any kind is almost as bad as a turnover.if Pitino is encouraging Prey to take a lot of threes, our defense better continue to be stellar 😂👍.

We didn't do a great job of feeding the post.

There is also the issue of teams literally tackling him the second the ball goes up. We haven't been getting those calls much in the 1st half but in the 2nd in some games the refs start to call it more.

Nova also had the big kid plus Dixon and other size to collectively throw at the glass.
Boyake who usually picks up fouls like flies on a goat's a.... played a lot more than he usually does and him beating on Zuby could have had an effect.

I also think, if the plan was to go for 3 and the win, I'd go to Scott there. He had a good night, and his length and high release point makes it harder to contend, which makes me feel he could have gotten a shot off without double clutching like Sim did. Oh well. Onto the next

Pitino stated in the presser that it was designed for a Wilcher three, which I believe was not a good decision.

Tough loss because we had it in our grasps. I don't blame the press on their last possession because Nova showed that they were having issues handling it and it got us back into the game. The kid who got off the winning 3 got a great look, but you also have to give him credit for knocking down a big shot with that much on the line. They also hit 3 other big shots coming down the stretch; Dixon at the shot clock buzzer when he was guarded very well and Brickus from nearly half court on what should have been a prayer. Last night just wasn't meant to be a win for us.

Regarding Sim's last shot, I wonder how much of it was rick just saying, "Let's take a shot and win (or lose) it right now rather than go into OT." The starters played a lot of minutes last night with the short bench and it looked like Kadary was spent. We could have maybe worn them down in OT or could have just kept sucking wind. Nova really did play a good game keeping us out of the paint, off the glass, and forcing a lot of threes. Their offense seemed to be Dixon muscle inside and then kick out for the open 3 as soon as the double came. Would have been more of that in OT.

Likely not what ultimately happened, but I wonder how much of that last shot was rick just having them go for the w and avoid OT. The game against Creighton is significantly bigger than Nova so maybe we save the guys the extra stress to give them a little more for the game on Sunday.

I know we aren't allowed to use a certain phrase anymore, but Sunday might be a.... If we lose Sunday Creighton takes over the number one spot in the league and owns the tiebreaker. If we win, we go up two, which I think we'll need. We still have to go into butler and Marquette and have UConn at home, which will be tough to go with the hall and DePaul. Creighton's last five include the hall and DePaul, but then home games against G'town and Bulter with Xavier on the road. On paper that is much easier schedule unless Xavier and / or Butler step up to be spoilers.

Prey has been a defensive standout in multiple games. He will score against Creighton with their less physical D. lefty has hit a couple of very big 3’s in situations where he’s been inserted specifically to take one shot. He has barely played, so how much can he contribute?

We’ve been involved in quite a few last shot wins games. We’ve won our share. Not going to win them all, but Sim hit a huge 3 with 29 seconds. Better D and we win that game too.

I agree Scott would have been my choice for the final three but have no problem with going for the win with a three there and Sim would be second choice

Easy to say after the fact. The only reason that last possession meant anything was because of the 3 he made with 29 seconds left. Credit Nova defense for hindering his rhythm of the shot.
