#11 Marquette (MSG), Tue., Feb. 4, 6:30p, FS-1

Is there anyone on here unhappy about the season, attendance, publicity, road competence and ranking of this group? I initially thought we would be a top 4 or 5 BE team, so I’m playing w house $ now. Do I think we could be the Dance winner, no. Do I think this group could win a couple of Dance games, yes & who knows w right draw what would happen in the third game. Guess my point is after so much ineptitude for a ton of years, we should appreciate the accomplishments of the squad and staff even if we stumble a bit in the 5 game gauntlet v best BE teams we now face. Enjoy the ride and appreciate the rarity of it at SJU.
hang this post in the Louvre.

I think that while we disagree on some things, we can all agree that this team can’t get off to a bad start (in a hole) against a quality Marquette team. I’m hoping that coach starts Kadary and Smith with KR playing the point, and Wilcher coming off the bench.

Hit like on this but want to also throw in a "totally agree" post for additional emphasis.

Dolan: Fix the damn shot clock, the beginning of the Providence was an embarrassment even by your standards.

Blame Charles Oakley if you want, but spend a few of your Altice billions and get a shot clock that works.

And while you're at it, settle your Optimum dispute.

Forget about opening for The Eagles with your band, you only get to play reputable venues because of your money and connections.

Now, St. John's, show Golden Leaf what Legends are made of and mop the floor with Marquette.

Key to the game: THREE WORDS, DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE.

Let's make Mike happy in Peru and bring home the "W".

In other words, this is a “must defend game.”
Exactly. They do a lot of their damage on dribble penetration off of pick and roll switches. Can't get beat off the dribble because then we'll be forced to help and that will allow open kick out 3s

Simon wasn’t a PG . Mostly a small forward . Couldn’t throw the ball in the Ocean but , a excellent defender and could jump out of the gym.
Simon could jump over the Rim and still miss the shot from 3 inches .

Likeable player, crowd favorite but , he and Clark could shoot 3-23 from 2 point range .

And , often did .
Shamorie was more point and Justin off guard that year. No way we beat Marquette without the smothering defense Justin played on Howard in those games. And while shooting was his weakness for sure and only reason he's not in NBA his two year shooting stats for us were respectable .468 from the field .351 from three and an admittedly shaky .638 from the line (admittedly his shooting numbers were much better his first year with us and brought his 2 year average up). That was to go with 6.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists per game and 2 steals. He'd fit right in on this year's team. He's my favorite Johnnie (along with Sonny Dove) and I won't see him maligned without coming to his defense every time. He was a player who always put the team first, got the most out of his ability and was a true lockdown defender and deceptively good passer. Big East defensive player of the year that last year and has gone on to have a nice career overseas.

1) Bully them inside. We've got a big size advantage and we're a much better rebounding team.
2) Don't turn the ball over. They're great getting teams to turn it over.

That's the two things I see in this one.
i would assume Kadary will post his guy up quite a bit....

Apologies if this was posted already. I might've missed it in the 10 pages of "must win" talk. Interesting stats nonetheless

We've been outstanding in the PnR. Zuby is out of this world and he's actually getting better. He's recovering so quick on his hedges. Prey also shows a lot of ability here. Sim has really improved as well.

I think we may be susceptible to the off ball stuff, though. Uconn loves that action...they run Ball of a ton screens away from the, well, ball.

Dozens of illegal screens by UConn helps them

The reason this team can do well in the tourney is we don’t rely on our offense or shooting to win. Teams that are not great on defense and rely on offense can have an off night of shooting and be beat. . Some feel our lack of shooting will eventually cost us but to me our defense is so good we will always be in any game we play.
This is so on the money!!!

I don't think the NCAA ranks teams until Selection Sunday - not publicly anyway.

LMAO... Good catch.

Pollsters in general. Seeing how the AP and Coaches polls are irrelevant, there is no need to use them.

Wait until week six/seven, and you'll see who does and doesn't belong.

Until then, it's gonna be polluted with teams from the P2.
