Did a quick bit of research back to the 2010-2011 season (Lavin's first year).
Here are the attendance fiqures for the MSG games:

Mon Dec 20th Davidson 6596
Tue Dec 21st Northwestern 5583

Mon Jan 3rd #13 Georgetown 8897
Wed Jan 12th #4 Syracuse 14440
Sun Jan 16th #11 Notre Dame 8550
Sun Jan 30th #3 Duke 19353

Thu Feb 10th #9 UConn 13652
Sat Feb 19th #4 Pitt 14514

I would love to see the data from the 1999 and 2000 seasons but couldn't find it. The inspiration was being impressed by a near sellout against Providence who likely will fall short of even the NIT.

Thus far this season

Sun Nov 17th New Mexico 12310
Sat Jan 11th Villanova 18178
Tue Jan 14th Georgetown 12757
Wed Jan 22nd Xavier 14545
Sat Feb 1st Providence 19196

Wow I thought we had a much bigger crowd for Pitt. Nice job finding this stuff

I would not have guessed it, but Matt A on the spaces said that Mullin's last coaching year won't get surpassed attendance-wise, at least by average.

Yeah not really comparable for that reason (weekend), plus the attendance was MUCH higher that year than the others before or after it. I heard Cragg gave out a ton of free tickets to people who hadn't previously been to a St. John's game (such as schools) in hopes that they'd return, but I'm not sure how much higher the volume of free tickets was that year compared to others.

A good comparison here is the PC game, nearly a 3K advantage this year.

I declined to use 2019 numbers as I know we were papering the city with freebies. I've heard we were generous with free tickets last year for some of the games, but have no knowledge of the status this year.

This is great news. Things had become pretty bad under Mike Anderson. I noticed one year (2021-2022) in particular was really anemic. We had to have lost money at MSG that year.

2021-2022 at MSG
vs. Pitt (5,177)
vs. Georgetown (5,161)
vs. Seton Hall (6,692)
vs. Villanova (9,712)
vs. UConn (6,567)

MSG Average: 6,662

Wow those numbers are horrific. COVID did play a part here (2 years after it started), but judging by the overall NCAA basketball attendance figures for 2021-22 and the following years, it should've resulted in only about a 10% attendance reduction. I know that UConn game was before their last two championships, but only drawing 6.5K fans for that game is unbelievable.

Another takeaway from all of the numbers in this thread is Syracuse really killed their brand by running away from us (one reason at least). They badly need a NYC presence, and with St. John's they'd be guaranteed to pack MSG and energize their NYC base. I get that we beat them a few times, but they have fallen to new lows since opting out of our series.

The last time I saw them play was in 2014 after they left the Big East. They were ranked #2 and the Garden was packed with Cuse fans. They of course won that game, which was the last time they beat us. Never would've imagined that these two programs would be where they are 11 years later.

At this point if they want to renew the rivalry we'd be doing them a favor, which is ironic because they left thinking the series only benefited us.

I believe while in the ACC and still ranked, they still drew well at the Garden when not playing us. Partly our delusion that the sun revolved around st johns.

Wasn't Syracuse the primary reason the series wasn't renewed? That's what I read on here, anyway.

This year they played 0 games at MSG. I get they can still play other teams at MSG (at least when they're good...) but we're their only major in-state rival and especially now can guarantee a packed MSG. Rivalries are just different and they've lost a major one, along with a guaranteed MSG game. That's not even to mention how much leaving the Big East Tournament has killed their brand, but at least with St. John's they could still do something about it.

The bottom of the ACC is littered with former Big East schools now in the basketball dumper nationwide.

Of these, Syracuse and Boston College stand out as having lost their regional sports identity by their departure, with their overall success oblierated.

In particular those two schools were colleges Johnny fans loved to hate and vice versa. Their entire league schedules of regional Big East teams were like that. Now they are not even an afterthought. BC of course has no shortage of qualified students applying. Syracuse is a pretty good school also but with snowy winters that can stretch from November thru April in a city without much hsppening, bad basketball can't help.

@Barclays on a Tuesday night, not part of season ticket package: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game/_/gameId/401486676/syracuse-st-johns

5900 people, but I was there and felt less.

Last played MSG in 2021 as part of Jimmy V classic against Villanova. 14k.

I think like almost every basketball program, Syracuse is facing the issue of following a legend and it not working out. Their brand guarantees them nothing, including relevancy.

Quick question: is there any way to get to Barclay's from the LIRR without walking a block outside? It just seems so weird that they didnt construct better access.

I sat in upper level seats at Barclay's a couple of weeks ago and was actually bordering on terrified at the steep pitch of seats. Sitting was fine, but with narrow spaces between rows was really afraid of stumbling and falling stepping over already seated fans to get to mine. Consider that fans with food and drink barely move and dont stand to help you navigate tight spaces. It turns out falling is a pretty frequent occurrence from those upper reaches, with at least 4 lawsuits against Barclays from fans injured by someone falling on them.

It makes old Yankee Stadium look flat

I don’t think so since that side only connects with the 2/3/4. It’s a real labyrinth down there.

I refuse to sit in the upper sections at Barclays. I really thought I’d fall off a cliff while up there.

The station is not directly connected and the top of the arena is not a pleasant place to get to.

Yes there is a way but you have to pay to get into NYCT’s fare zone to do it. Due to the numerous subway tunnels and passageways in the area, to do a direct connection would have required a deep and circuitous route which would not have been cost effective for whomever paid for it and would have defeated the purpose of a more direct route.

The only reason MSG has such connections (you still have to go outside) is due it being built directly over part of the original Pennsylvania Station.
