#11 Marquette (MSG), Tue., Feb. 4, 6:30p, FS-1

I think that for the Marquette game, Pitino cannot tell Wicher or Scott for that matter to keep shooting threes if their first few shots are not falling. We are not going to get many opportunities from turnovers with that team so each possession must be valued. Coming away empty on too many possessions will lead to a loss, good defense or not. It almost did today and PC is no Marquette.

Let’s hope Smith has gotten some of the cobwebs out and regains most of his form prior to his injury. A good game from him will be important in this game but I believe he and the team will come through with a hard fought W.

Here’s what’s puzzling to me. For those that don’t feel this is an important must win. If you all claim to be the fans you say you are, and claim this team to be as good as you say, why not hold the team to a high standard. I expect this to be a win and will be very dissapointed if they don’t. I don’t expect wins on the road at Marquette or even UConn but why shouldn’t we expect a win at home?

And that my friends, is not “silly” at all it’s having confidence in the product on the floor.
No one said it's not an important game to win but that is very different than a "must" win which typically means if you don't win you have lost something irretrievable. If we lose Tuesday and win Friday or win Tuesday and lose Friday we will be just fine and there will be no loss in momentum.
And as far as SJU not being big in Florida with all due respect that doesn't matter as long as they are huge in NYC which they are right now. They're not big in North Carolina where I live either (nor are the Knicks) but all that really matters is NYers now love both teams as another sellout tonight for the Knicks will show.
Go NY Go NY Go!

After being lost in the wilderness for most of last 25years, some fans need to qualify success to date and doubt a team that is 4&1 on road, did not lose a game in January, is undefeated at home, ranked and tied for first in BE. For those guys, “Jesus Christ” is not walking through that door. 😇

Wow. An “important must win” sounds extremely more vital than just an ordinary must win.

I expect to win and hope we win but let’s look at a few things. We are playing the #7 team in the country so whether we are ranked 1 or 15, this will be a tough game that can go either way. Also we are on an insane winning streak that will have to end sooner or later. Enjoy the ride.

I just used Florida as an example but it is important that the Johnnies are big nationally since, unlike the old days, the Metro area isn’t exclusive to the talent market. It’s why the same kids go to the Dukes, Carolinas and Kansas of the world…… name recognition. And if you don’t think Florida is importsnt, tell that to the kids who play at IMG or Monteverde academies. 😎👍

Could be wrong but I think RJ is from Florida; won't hold that against him though. Only kidding.

I don’t think it’s a must win for the rankings, Dance invite etc. I think it’s a must win mostly from the PR aspect of it, the NY fan base, the casual fans and the “name brand”. Here in Florida, people don’t know St Johns
Yeah but you told me you lived on a boat in the Everglades. Seems like they would be mostly gator fans :)

I see your point, but looking what has transpired today, plenty of upsets by large margins. I don’t agree this is a must win tournament wise, but do agree for the team’s confidence. Canthey play with the big boys, it is very important to win.

Must win is probably not the correct terminology IMHO. However, I would describe this as a statement game. We are on a roll, have an incredible 19 and 3 record and our three losses are by a total of just five points.

That all said, we don't have a victory among our 19 wins that stands out as a truly top flight signature win. Marquette is the best team we played by far, are ranked inside the top ten and like us they have been on a roll. Beating them in a showdown for first place in the Big East would make a statement that we are worthy of a high seed in the tournament.

Dreaming big is something we have been doing for a long while but this is one of the first times in the last quarter of a century where those dreams are a reachable tangible reality.

Disagree, this is the most important game of the year to date.
Every game will be the freaking most important damn game. We got Rick for 1st place conference finishes, to win the B.E. Tournament, to win the NCAA Tournament, and nothing less than that. He's one of the best college coaches ever.
He wants it all, why not follow his lead?

When we win on Tuesday night, I'll scream yeahhhh, right after that I'll thinking about UConn.

Not celebrating any wins, oh I'll celebrate like no other when we win it all. That's how bad I want it all this year.

We are having a great season. We are having a great season at 19-3, and we’d still be having a great season if that becomes 19-4.

Where are we if we lose a close one to Marquette but go into Storrs and win? Is this still not a great a season because we lost a home game? I agree this game Tuesday is massive, but it’s not a must win in any way.

It can’t be, not with the other Q1 opportunities we have ahead of us moving forward. I think what you’re pinpointing is you’d start to doubt if we’re “that good” if we lose. That doesn’t make it a must win realistically though
I get it Jack, we aren't used to our best start in 40 years. 19-3 is absolutely insane for St. John's, but this is nothing new to Rick, he done this many many times. We're going to be even better in February. NYC is falling in love with SJU bball

That's a special thing to have.

I like it, a “must win statement game.”

Everyone I know not on this board is talking or texting about St Johns. I have clients calling me after every game I had people at JFK last week rooting for St Johns when they put the game on for me. One of my friends that I brought to the msg open practice before the season started is all in and has been to bunch of games this year and I'm sure next year he will be season ticket holder ( he was at the game today )

My buddy from work who sits with us in 114 last game he walks into a bar in Del Ray Florida and they had the St Johns game on before he got there and the place was going nuts

We ended up at a Casino sports bar in Peru today trying to see the game they couldn't get it although somehow they had motorcycle racing on one of the tvs ( Ironically a racer named MMar in 2nd place and crapped the bed and fell to 12th ) but the Peruvian Manager of the place was frantically trying to get the game for us and he knew all about St Johns and Pitino and knew that we were playing Marquette next and already guaranteed us they will have that game on for us. He even knew Zuby

Luckily Nat signed up for some fubo thing so we watched it from her iPad there with the manager.

Lavin had huge Buzz that first year. Ironically it was about this time Lavin's first year where we started to build momentum but the Pitino buzz is on a different level not just NYC

NYC is ready to next level explode if we keep this up
Usually I go right home after games but today my cousin and I stopped in TRACKS. It was packed with St. John's fans enjoying the win. Walking to TRACKS, there was a joy in the air that I haven't felt in a very long time. Strangers in RED acknowledging each other. No one gave a Flying F--K that we blew a lead, we were all happy to have won. Inside it was just one big celebration.

The ride home on the train was very pleasant. Yep Providence came back, but what I chose to watch was Kadary coming up CLUTCH at the end. At this point in my life, I don't have time to wallow in negativity. We showed that we are able to deal with adversity, have our backs against the wall, and win, This team is resilient and has heart. They are WINNERS.

Let's Go ST. JOHN'S!!!

If st johns losses on Tuesday, the #1 one thing about st johns will be, "yeah but they havent beaten anymore".

I want that narrative killed and I believe it will be.

Johnnies will win on Tuesday.
