Providence (MSG), Sat., Feb. 1, 12 NOON, CBSSN

Smith has been out for three and a half games. He needs floor time to get his sea legs back.
1,000%. And Pitino was smart to let him play through the rust. He is a fearless player, but he was definitely more hesitant than normal and getting his legs under him. The transition "dime" to Zuby is what we saw regularly earlier in the year.

To the kid's credit, he still had a bunch of assists and played through the struggles/rust/not feeling himself.

Honestly if his ability to knock down open 3s comes back before the other stuff that's tied to his insane athleticism, it wouldn't bother me. Because that's the biggest weakness we have right now with Scott's and Sim's shooting struggles.

Watched the first half live, coached, second half on tape. My impression, we went into coast mode, Providence didn’t quit, got hot, we missed a few foul shots and the 3 is a great equalizer. Nothing unacceptable about anything to me, we got hit with a legitimate D1 BE run, BUT we won, obviously with Richmond capping off a great game.
I did get a huge kick reading the posts cockily declaring Providence dead with plenty of 2nd half left. Credit to Providence and their coach for hanging tough.
On to Marquette….bring the D Johnnies

Maybe they were looking past Providence and thinking about Quette.
This team doesn't look past anyone. I think that's clear.

Did we led our guard down a bit when we were up 19 with 7 minutes left? Probably. Pitino went to the subs. Providence hit some 3s. And Rahim went insane.

If Rahim misses even one of those during certain stretches of the last 7 minutes, the score probably widens and it's not close.

Great game by Richmond. Luis was solid.

We did a lot of things that I didn’t like this game but still opened a 19 point lead with less than 10 minutes left. To give up 30 points in less than 8 minutes is something to look at. Need to be better on offense in the first half against Marquette.

One thing I've noticed the past few games is that Zuby is getting absolutely tackled by teams trying to keep him off the offensive glass. It seems the refs let that play more in the first half than the second, but if I'm sure Pitino and others are making that known to officials.

Annoyed me in the first half when it occurred a few times and then Scott got called for a clean block the other way.
And I fully expect Marquette to do this.

It's not even the traditional boxing out, or even the more modern "turn and face and then assume the box out position".

He's literally being grabbed, tugged and Ray Lewis'ed after the shot goes up. Johnnies shoot on my end during the first half of these games and so I have a great vantage point. Our whole section has been saying it.

Coming home on LIRR from a great game at Garden. Tremendous atmosphere that we have not seen in decades at MSG

special play by a guy with ice water in his veins to win the game.

then you come on here and it is one complaining post after another. Man I just don’t get it.
You want to hear complaining, listen to Pitino’s press conference. He admitted the team defense was horrendous in the closing minutes of the game. Those who are complaining agree.

Although a win, most shot horrendous, it was an ugly game. A team people thought we would beat easily, we were lucky to beat. Defense below par today. If we play like this against Marquette , we will get our butts kicked. That said a win is a win.

Did Providence bring many fans? I’m kind of blown away by this. I’ve been skeptical that there was a “hidden” fanbase waiting for a decent product to show up. Very happy to have been wrong.
Casual SJ fans living in NYC see the publicity the program is receiving and buy tickets. That helps.

Here’s what’s puzzling to me. For those that don’t feel this is an important must win. If you all claim to be the fans you say you are, and claim this team to be as good as you say, why not hold the team to a high standard. I expect this to be a win and will be very dissapointed if they don’t. I don’t expect wins on the road at Marquette or even UConn but why shouldn’t we expect a win at home?

And that my friends, is not “silly” at all it’s having confidence in the product on the floor.

Crazy game but a win is a win! 19-3 and can’t aks for much more but we have guys like Larry wright posting non stop during the late providence run and that’s it and is still trolling

Sure expect to win! I think most of us do. But calling it a must win is churlish. We lose and we are still going to the tournament so I don’t get how it is a must win.

Silly, did you follow SJU’s elite 8 team with Artest and Barkley? We finished 3rd in the Big East behind UConn and Miami. We were 0-3 against them in reg season. Also lost to ranked Stanford, Purdue and Duke. Just saying.
