Conference Realignment

Figured we could use a thread for this given how much things continue to change. The ACC may not break up after all, at least for the next few years. Potentially good news for the Big East sticking together.

Some UConn fans are upset about this, as they think it'll decrease their odds at an invite. In the event that the Big East ever does break up, though, St. John's during the next week can really solidify themselves as one of the most valuable Big East brands.

Very curious how FOX situates themselves with Big 12/Big East/Big 10 contracts expiring.

If FSU/Clemson can't get out of the grant of rights, may make sense for everyone to re-up until 2036 where it could be an end game realignment.

Saw this:

"As part of the settlement, Clemson and Florida State are asking the ACC to agree to reduce penalties for exiting the grant of rights after 2031, when TV contracts for the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 are set to expire."

It looks like around 2031 things may get pretty crazy since that's also when all of the big conference contracts end, but at least that's 6 years from now.

In the meantime revenue redistribution would likely (further) hurt regional rivals such as Syracuse and Pitt... sounds good to me!

Would love to know what the details of this ACC TV deal actually is after 2031 then. It makes no sense to re-up if you're losing two of your top programs + naming a price for leaving to the other schools.

Maybe ESPN is just tired of all of the lawsuits and is conceding that they'll lose FSU and Clemson before 2036 no matter what. At least this would totally stabilize the conference for another 6 years.

Man I still have no idea what schools are in what conference.

Is the Big 8 still a thing?

Not surprising;

Very consistent with my years-long assumption that at some point it would be five 16-team conferences who would decide that there is no reason for them to share their money with everyone else. Though I suppose now it could wind up being four 24-team conferences or something. They will definitely exert maximum leverage to the detriment of everyone else, the sport(s) and fans.

Sadly the way of the world in which the thought of sacrificing something for the common good and long-term benefits is considered laughable.

Well said.

Right now there are 67 teams total. Enough for their own tournament. I can’t wait for that big first round upset when Northwestern squeaks past Vandy in a play in game and then goes on to beat Duke.

It’s really a Power 2. The ACC is like Fredo pretending to be a big boy with his brothers and the Godfather. It’s a just a countdown until it gets absolutely destroyed.

After that happens, it’s 2 giants and the little brother Big 12. The Big Ten and SEC could conspire to absolutely destroy the Big 12 when it comes time to divide the ACC.

Football should have a distinct governing body and separate divisions.

Where do u see the BE fitting in...?
-Us acquiring more teams ?
-Some teams being acquired...?

Would be amazing if we could make a play to get Duke bball.... maybe a couple others.... but that's the infinity stone we need to remain in the "Power" convo for bball

I think Wake would be the first domino to fall. They might just drop football altogether once ACC implodes.

I’m worried the SEC/B10 wield the Reality stone…

They should put all the Olympic sports back into the old conference alignments as they were. Then just separate out football and set it up however they want as long as it stands on its own.
