Transfer Portal Mania

Here is the question I have did Kugel sign scholarship papers? If not then he never really left the Portal.

If he did then he left the Portal and since it is passed the May 1 deadline how can he re-enter and still be eligible for next year?

Remember no exceptions even for Grad transfers.

Also assuming he did not sign grant-in-aid/scholarship paperwork with Kansas, then Self committed a minor NCAA infraction by specifically talking about him with Andy Katz.

Unless Kugel signed with Kansas and secretly re-entered the Portal by May 1, but if that were so someone would have reported on it already.

“We also got a commitment from a young man from Florida, Kugel, Riley Kugel, that it’s up in the air whether or not Riley will come, but certainly those other three we feel really good about.”

Chatter is its a credits issue

Chatter is its a credits issue
That's fine if it is an admissions issue.

But regardless of the issue it is past May 1. I am not aware of any exception based on failure to admit a student/athlete allowing them to enter portal past May 1 and still be eligible to play immediately.

The way I interpret what happened/the implications from your post is:
1) Kugel never actually signed the scholarship forms because they've been trying to figure out the credits. Therefore, he never technically left the portal.

Thus,
2) Bill Self committed a violation by talking about a player not signed

Smith's situation has been labeled a "transcript issue" or "credits issue" which might imply he's had bad grades, which I don't believe is the case. My understanding is due to the fact that he transferred from Miss St to GTech to Utah and now to SJU having that many credits from that many universities seamlessly transfer isn't easy. St. John's made a similar situation with Daniss Jenkins work last year, and I've heard this is potentially similar to that. Not 100% positive but that's what I've been led to believe.

Yeah looks like he never signed scholarship paperwork.

So not sure what Self was doing specifically talking about Kugel himself. He should know better.

Pretty sure Self talking about a kid that committed but didn’t sign isn’t in the top 150 of NCAA violations that Self has committed over the years

It's a minor violation but one a coach like Self should/would never make.

He should know better.

Trust me coaches and their compliance depts are very attentive to this stuff.

I remember SHU basketball twitter page retweeted a recruit quote about SHU. Again small violation and they went out of their way to delete the tweet and apologize.

I thought Daniss took summer classes at Iona and graduated and came to St. John's in the fall as a grad student. Am I wrong about that?

You're right. I recall we were a bit jumpy that Daniss wouldn't graduate in time for the Fall Semester.

Don't know how the Staff is approaching Deivon's admission requirements.
No concerns have been reported.

He'll take a one game suspension for the matchup against Pittsburg St., and that will be an "appropriate" penalty.
