"The rest of the guys have to be ready to play. He's going to attract a lot of double teams, triple teams. Everybody's going to have to be ready on the catch-and shoot or to be ready to make a play and that's what we did today and it helped us out a lot."

The mercurial Brown, who is committed to St. John's, did not re-enter the game until the second half. When he returned, his presence and feathery left-handed hand garnered notice. Brown, who has been working to establish his left hand more, has also been working on keeping a straight, distraction-free path in front of him. The oft-troubled recruit was arrested on robbery charges in May. A Miami Beach native, Brown recently transferred from Elevation (Sarasota, FL) Prep so he could complete his probation sentence.

On Saturday, Brown's performance was free of any fits of anger or outbursts.

"You are looking at a new Zach Brown," he said with a smile. "I know I needed to make adjustments and make changes in my life. I'm a changed man. It's a new team and I'm with new people and I could start a whole new life here (at Calusa)."

In Brown's previous life, which took place on the rough-and-tumble, crime-laced sections of Liberty City, adversity surfaced. One of the reasons Brown chose St. John's is because he established a deep connection with head coach Chris Mullin. Mullin is a classic example of someone who has emerged from adversity unscathed, having overcome alcoholism during his lengthy NBA career.

"I've been to jail, I've been on drugs, alcohol and everything like that so basically we had a sit down for the first time and we talked about bouncing back from that lifestyle and leaving it for good," Brown said.

He opened up to me and I opened up to him. He knows what I've been through. I can't just go with anyone who can say, 'Ok you've been through this, you've been through that.' He talked to me about what his situation was and I felt it was similar to me. Ever since we've had a great relationship."

Brown cited SJU assistant Matt Abdelmassih as another major figure in his support system. Both he and De La Grana have been instrumental in helping him keep his focus and continue on as the reformed Zach Brown.
Brown has made conditioning a major focus.

"On both sides of the floor he attracts a lot of attention," De La Grana explained. "We're trying to teach him the game a little more, get his IQ up so he knows what plays to make. We've got to make sure everyone around him is ready and get him better everyday. He's been doing that so far, he's been great for us."

Since Mullin has officially signed Brown, I guess he feels all the kid's baggage and issues will not be a problem. It does present a playing time issue at center, since both Owens and Sima are returning next year. I'd hate to see Sima transfer, or Owens leave as a fifth year graduate transfer, especially if they both play well and the team has a successful season this year.

Owens is a Soph. & not really a center, more of a hybrid 4. Lastly, let's see if Brown gets academics in order. Those multiple schools tend to complicate things. To me Sima is a four year keeper.

With the exception of all three being shot blockers, these guys are different style players. If you want to call this a problem, it is the kind of problem coaches want. As I see it you got Brown and Sima as strictly 5s. Owens and Yakwe can play 4/5 depending upon the matchup. Clark 3/4 with his combination of strength and shooting skill and RF more of a 3 but maybe gets time at 4 since we've got this mentality going of playing 3 or maybe even 4 guards. We'll see how ready Brown comes in to take minutes but sounds like he still has a long way to go and having these other guys is the perfect timing for transition. Talk of transfer because Brown is coming in is silly.

This is the way it should be done. I think maybe you are just confused because of how FUBAR the recruiting and reloading has been the past several years...

As someone mentioned the other day I wouldn't mind one bit if this ended up like a Lovett situation and he had to sit a year here and focus on himself

Agree with all 3 points you made on Owens, Brown and Sima and if I may add Owens has transferred once already. The rule is you have 5 years at school in which to play 4. This is his third year of University. If he transfers again he looses a full year of playing time unless he leaves after next season and provided he has graduated. However the kid is getting solid minutes which may increase as a result of his strong play. Furthermore the team seems to love one another. Can't see a valid reason for him to transfer even if , and we all say if, Zach makes it to campus.

I'd be thrilled if he wound up like Lovett., just so long as he winds up here. We don't need him next year anyway.

I was just pointing out that there are only so many minutes to divide up among a talented and versatile roster. Almost every one seems to be able to play multiple positions. So, if Brown is eligible to play, and is as good as reported, playing time will have reduced for the returning post players. Factor in Clark and Simon, we would have a roster with maybe 12 players expecting decent minutes. These days it could be a problem with chemistry, which seems pretty good at this point. It's a risk/reward situation.
I remember what happened to a very good team when the wrong highly-touted player was added. I'm referring to Curtis Redding.

Not sure if Brown sitting is best for fan enjoyment or overall record, but it's definitely better for Clark and Owens. Owens at C and Clark at PF next season, then Owens moves to PF and Clark to SF in 2018-19.
