St. John’s will have a big present waiting for them in Queens when they return from Maui.
Highly-rated freshman forward Kassoum Yakwe will be available to play in games immediately after being held out as the NCAA Eligibility Center determined his status.
The school announced the 6-foot-7 Yakwe was cleared on Wednesday, during the Johnnies’ seventh-place game against Chaminade in the Maui Invitational. Yakwe will be eligible to play next Wednesday against Fordham in The Bronx.
The news comes at the same time as Yakwe’s former high school teammate at Our Savior New American on Long Island, McDonald’s All-American Cheick Diallo of Kansas, was also cleared. OSNA was reportedly under review by the NCAA, which was at the head of the investigation.
Yakwe picked the Johnnies over Oregon in late August and immediately reclassified to be a freshman this year. Yakwe, a four-star prospect who attended Our Savior New American on Long Island, was the Defensive Player of the Year on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit over the summer, averaging 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks for game, for the PSA Cardinals, and leading them to the prestigious Peach Jam.
“He plays with a lot of energy, runs like a deer, very active,” one Division I coach familiar with Yakwe said at the time he committed. “I think he has tremendous upside.”
St. John’s, however, remains without its other prized freshman, four-star point guard Marcus LoVett Jr., who was ruled a partial qualifier by the NCAA, meaning he can only practice, and not play in games.
