Thanks Knight - I poked around earlier looking at their roster and stats. Nothing really jumped out at me, looks like they have good guards and serviceable big men. On paper they look like a fairly similar matchup to us although their defense is much better (but then, everyone's defense is much better, we are something like 200th in the country in points allowed I think). None of their wins or losses jumps out at you other than that I don't know how they ended up playing Northern Iowa twice (and i think it was twice in one week). How does that happen? We know Mack can coach and that they will play hard, they always do.

Anyway I haven't seen them play yet this year - anyone else?

Have watched them a few times. Tough opponent with three good scoring guards in Macura, Sumner & Bluiett. Sumner is 6'4 Pg with a ton of talent. To me, he is the most difficult match-up. They don't generate much down low, unlike Creighton & Patton, so hope we can hold our own there.

If Ahmed has a better game & the dynamic duo are on we could hang with them hopefully and at least make it interesting. As always, Mack will have them prepared defensively.

Btw, Macura is a lot like those Duke kids who get under your skin & get away with things, chippy. :)

A scheduling quirk. The second Northern Iowa game was on the schedule. The first game was a tournament. "The Musketeers beat Northern Iowa 67-59 for championship of Tire Pros Invitational in Orlando last Sunday."

So[strike] if [/strike]when we beat X, ergo, we are the reigning Tire Pro Champs. Eff the BE, I want us to be Tire Pro Champs.

I was surprised by their stats as well. They definitely shot it better last year. Still a very good and well coached team on the road. Hopefully we can play well.

We could have the same thing with Long Beach State next year. Don't know if it will be consecutive games, but we could play them twice (Depaul and Missouri State played twice this year, too).

We are scheduled to play a true road game at LBSU next year, and they are also competing with us (and six other schools) in the Disney World tournament.

Maybe they didn't think Northern Iowa was going to beat ASU and Oklahoma to get to the finals. But it wasn't a very strong field overall.

As usual in the Big East the STJ strength goes against another great pair of guards. Looking forward to the game.

Sumner, a big guard, will pose a problem against the likes of Lovett or Ponds, especially if he takes them down low. Ellison will probably guard Bluiiett . Their threesome - Bluiett, Sumner and Macura are tough offensively.

they've got a bunch of big guards with a nice mix of athleticism and experience. that said, even before they lost Davis and they were sky high in the pre-season rankings, this is the team that I thought we'd upset. We can outscore them but we have to limit turnovers. I'll be watching for those casual handoffs and ball drops that our guys do and Xavier looking to take advantage. I'd also like to see them mixing in the zone for this game.

We are a very optimistic bunch going into a game where we are 14 point underdogs. I think the Creighton game we were only -8

There are some here that would be optimistic if they were being lead to the electric chair. ;) :)

We must measure that optimism with reality. What would make me happy is just keeping it under 10 If we shoot better than 40 % with
with the 3 and if we can play better defensive , if we can pick better for our guards if we shoot our foul shots better if we finish and drive more at the rim if we move faster on both defense and offense if we communicate better I ,If If we have a chance LOL But will enjoy the game and the effort we make regardless

It's the hope that kills you.

Why not be optimistic? The wins over 'Cuse, Butler and DePaul were not flukes. We are not perfect but have two tremendous talents in Ponds and LoVett. If just two of the supporting cast step up (looking at you Misters Owens and Ahmed), we bring some solid D, take care of the ball, get a few breaks and Blueitt / Sumner get in foul trouble, then we have a shot at a W.... Like I said, it's the hope that kills you.

Unfortunately I will be unable to see the game (indoor track meet for Junior TX Redman) but good luck today to SJU.

I think it was pretty obvious that we need the effort we gave in the 2nd half vs Creighton to be a 40 minute thing. Even then it might not be enough as we do not yet have the talent level of some of our opponents. However, I think these are the type of games we can grow from as long as we come with the effort. Hopefully our guys give all they have and let the chips fall where they will. Let's see if we can steal one on the road today!

The Shadow's refrain
One never knows, do one...
Lose an expected win, win an expected loss -
I second your hope that "our guys give it all they have"!
