Worst Stat

OH yes let's focus on the negative. I so love when we do that. There is nothing so excitingly awesome as pointing out our own flaws.
This should be the bestest thread ever.

The reason I root for teams is not for their number of championship, but rather my connection with the team. My first St. John's memory would be the 1978 ECAC Holiday Festival when St. John's trailing by 17 came back to beat Duke in the third place game I believe. Later that year, a trip to the Elite 8 and Black Sunday in North Carolina cemented my love of St. John's.
You can say no national championships but older fans will tell you about the NIT Championship when the NIT was the it tournament. While you are correct about the no NCAA championship - I will say so what (with no disrespect towards you), If its meant to be it will happen, if not there are worse things that can happen. Took my father to Carnessecca this year (he is 81) and the memories of SJU streamed out. How he stayed up in 1951 to listen to championship game of the NCAA on radio and how he cried in his bed the whole night. How the US Olympic trials were held at Carnessecca's in 1964 - and how he still wonders how STJ surivived while CCNY and NYU didn't during the betting scandals on the 1950's.
My memories are the Pittsburgh game with Hardy dancing around the baseline two years ago- Elite 8 loses to Duke (Singleton with early foul trouble) and miracle endings with Marcus, Boo and even Omar. My team may or may not have ever won it all - but for me (and maybe other members nearing 50 in age) I'm okay with it. Do I want the national championship- sure, and hope it comes sooner than later! But if not the ride has brought me to the extremes of happy and sad- and would not trade them for anything!

Forever RED! - Buy you a beer at the next game!

All I can say in response to your post, is that it's bout 20 years out of date. In the Carnesecca days, where some post season bid was just about guaranteed and an NCAA bid expected even when the field was 32 or 16, fans would bitch about not winning a championship. None other than Father Cahill, a HUGE basketball fan, would lament to those who knew him that "Looie could never win the big games (post-season)". For us, the whole season was about doing some damage in the NCAAs, and no matter what our record, we cringed when we saw the first round NCAA pairings, and waited for something to go wrong. If we were one and out, dismal failure. If we lost in the second round after a tough 1st round win that should have been easier, more laments.

After about ten years of absence leading up to Denver in 2011, I can tell you having gone there, I have a renewed outlook on this. For the first time in a decade, we were playing in a game that could lead to the national championship. SJU held a free reception for fans in a hotel before the game, there was a solid student section travelling, and even in a loss, there was something exciting about just being there.

You want to groan about no national championships with all those trips? Try being a fan of Fordham, or Manhattan, or Hofstra, or any number of local teams that rarely have even gone to the dance. Yea, I hope to live to see a championship, but after going without meat for 10 years, i'm happy with hamburger or hot dogs right now.

you'd really have to be an "older" fan to remember when the nit was the "it" tournament. i hate to be cynical, but st john's was one of the owners of the nit...so it was in their best interest (conflict of interest) to recruit and remain at a high level of mediocrity in order to get in and cash the paycheck. someone will point out that ncaa payouts are bigger...but as always, college hoops is pay to play.

i don't recall reading that nyu was involved in the point shaving scandals of the '50s. i know a couple of our guys got caught. coach lapchick was a highly honorable man and i'd guess the program was allowed to stick around thanks to the weight of his integrity.

the program brings some joy...much like being in a topless place. you can flirt all you want, but her 6'6" 300 pound husband is waiting behind the curtain.

enjoy the hot dogs and hamburgers.

Yeah, well Gonzaga and Wisconsin have been to 15 straight without a win but I wouldn't mind being in their shoes.

St. John's leads in most NCAA trips with no National Championship.

shameful
When I first started coming around here I was told haada root for us to lose because we needed Norm gone. I understood , but thats some depressing place to be when this is supposed to be fun. Now we in a place where people are saying look out for us and the tone still in the dumpster. For where we at and can hope to be we still have more downer stuff on here then I would have figured. Why is that?

Because we are all New York fans. I'm with you, I was always optimistic during this past year and it is more fun that way. Why be a fan if your just gonna dump on them all day? Well it's because of this new era, hope has surrounded the program and we have come up small the last two years. For a lot of these fans your gonna see once they see the wins rolling in the downers will disappear. Lets just back to the tournament next year and please beat Georgetown (haven't beaten them since Hardys senior year). Once we get back and hear our name called on selection Sunday some excitement will jolt back into this program. If we come up small next year, even I will start to become frustrated given the talent we have. Some people become frustrated faster than others.

Fellas, let's just get back to the ncaa's yearly. As it stands, with Lavin and the new conference, we have our best shot at doing that for a long time. We are bringing in talent to make runs in the NCAA's as well. National Championships are hard to come by even for the best schools. Let's get there yearly so we can create our own tourney destiny.

A quick check of the NCAA stats show that In the past 60 years, 27 or so different schools won the title. Take away the cheats who likely paid players or engaged in other tricks, and the number drops. Our problem is we were poor cheaters. Who in their right mind pays a guy like Abe Keita to play? As a fan, I set my sights lower. The University did OK for a place run like a mom and pop business for all of those years. Now that we recruit nationally, and have a high profile coach, the hope for a deep run somewhere down the line has improved. Meanwhile, I saw a lot of good basketball and some great basketball over a long period of time. And some horrible basketball the last 10 years.

Cause realistically, that's all we gonna get.

there was a time that the NIT was held in higher regard and we won, so that statement is misleading
