Red Storm Represented In National Preseason Polls
St. John’s receives votes in AP and USA Today preseason rankings.

QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2014) – Just weeks after the St. John’s women’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll, anticipation surrounding the Red Storm’s 2014-15 campaign continues to build. Head coach Joe Tartamella’s squad appears in both the Associated Press Preseason Poll, garnering seven votes, and the USA Today Sports Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 16 votes.
Last season, Tartamella’s second as head coach at St. John’s, the Red Storm received one vote in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll. By season’s end, the Red Storm had risen to as high as 22 in the AP Poll (Feb. 17) during its run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
BIG EAST foe DePaul also found itself in the preseason polls, checking in at No. 18 in both.
The Red Storm will begin its quest for a sixth-straight NCAA Tournament berth when it opens the 2014-15 season at Yale On Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. St. John’s returns three starters and seven letterwinners from a squad that advanced to the program’s fourth BIG EAST Tournament Final last season while claiming a program-best 11-straight conference wins. Included in those returning starters is 2013-14 WBCA All-American Honorable Mention and unanimous 2014 All-BIG EAST First Team pick junior guard Aliyyah Handford who averaged 16.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals last campaign. Also returning for Tartamella's squad is senior forward Amber Thompson (7.8 points, 9.2 boards) a 2013-14 All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection who broke the program's single-season rebounding record last season, as well as junior guard Danaejah Grant (10.9 points, 5.0 rebounds), a selection for the 2014-15 Preseason All-BIG EAST team.
